Hey guys, Walt here. Please do not forget to subscribe for the mail list, the form, YouTube builder, the blog, the whole thing and all these pips here. We are all in twitter.
We have a question right now where it says, “Walt, in all open chord, all strings open, can that be considered a chord?” The answer absolutely, that is a chord. Anything is a chord.
The reason why this is a chord is that this right here is a chord because it consists of notes and notes make up chords. The notes that I am playing here are E, A, D, G, B and E. Well, if I write that down, it becomes a sort of E dominant chord with the 11th up top. Here are my notes on my guitar. If I play the open strings, E, A, D, G, B, A, let us look at this. We have E, G, B A where E G and B create my E minor chord. So just like that. That was a sort of E minor chord. We are going to throw in our A which is the fourth note of that chord so it is automatically an E minor chord with the added eleven. You could maybe call it and E minor SUS or better call it an E minor eleven. The reason why is because you have this dominant. So now, you are at an Em7 and 11. And if you want to play on the guitar, there is your open strings. So let us play this. Here is your Em7 and then if I want to play it on the piano, you are going to have this, E, G, B. All right, then we have D, A and then the E on top. All right, it sounds really, really cool. It sounds really cool on the piano because it got the 11th and it got the fourth in it which makes the chords amazing. Yes, that is a chord, it sounds amazing.
Okay now, listen, if you are getting confused of what is an 11th chord, just understand what I told you before, 9=2, 11=4 and 13=6. So when I say in E11 chord, it is just saying an E chord with the fourth note, 11=4. 11 is just another way of writing four. So, what is the fourth note in the key of E? E, F, G, A in E minor or in E11 is an E chord which is E G# B and let us throw in the fourth so we have E, G#, E11. It sounds pretty cool.
Another question here, “Walt, I am not good at music per se where at least I was never able to pick it up but I am starting a website to help me look for a musician that will help musicians around build a community.” Awesome. “It is all because of you and your music lessons that have inspired me to get back.” And I say, that is awesome. When it is all up, definitely let me know. Shoot me an email.
Any questions about the idea of how the open string – that chord is my Em7 with the 11 on top – does everyone understand how I build that up? And remember, those are the open strings on the guitar. It sounds ugly on the guitar because it is actually tuned in fourths on the guitar. If I were to do that on the fourths here, it will be E, A, D, G, B, F. So here is the score.
All right guys, so that is it for this lesson. And what I want you guys to do is try a little cool chord. Use a lot of open strings, really learn it and when you learn it, write down on a piece of sheet music. From there, transcribe it and then throw it on the piano. Make sure it sounds cool. Maybe that is a chord that you used for your song. That is cool too. Remember, write it down, make sure that there is a lot of open string because anything is a chord. The only reason why I cannot play a 25-note chord on this guitar is because there is no 25 strings on it. The only reason why I cannot play a 25-note chord on the piano here is because I do not have 25 fingers. If I have 100% choir, I better play a hundred note chord or I can play a two note chord. I will have 98 people singing in E, 100% singing the G# and I will have that chord. Maybe that is the sound that I am looking for. So that is it.
All right, let us stop this video. We will twitter this video out. Listen guys, do not forget to subscribe to the mailing list, the forum, you file me and all my pips here. These are the people on the internet right here below, not me. File also on twitter. I will put some links in the video description and that is it. Follow everyone on twitter. So there you go guys. Peace, love and harmony.
