Host: In the first year of life, this is a little side point, parents really shouldn't restrict too much fat that first year, is that true?
Marc S Jacobson: That's right we don't even measure cholesterol before age 2. We want kids to eat. The danger is, foods that are high in fat are also high in energy. So in order for kids to grow, they need that. If they are on very low fat diets, they won't get enough, they get too much bulk, and not enough energy from their food. They will not grow well.
Host: If you think of a very very heavy kid the first year, is there anything we could do safely?
Marc S Jacobson: Well, there are a few rare genetic diseases that cause children to really gain very rapidly in the first couple of years. Was there something that you, the pediatrician needs to assess the family history, and examine the child and look carefully for it, but those are very different than (Voice Overlap) unless they are epidemic.
Host: You would say always check with your pediatrician first?
Marc S Jacobson: Yes.
Host: Okay, and if the symptom comes up, there are plenty of specialists around to help meet the needs or whatever their problem is, but you always call your primary care physician.
Marc S Jacobson: That's right.
