Hi, I am Ashley. Welcome to my studio.
Today, we are going to be talking about drying materials basics, the pencil. So, in selecting a pencil for your artwork which you would like to make, you really want to take into consideration the hardness of a pencil. With most pencils, you will have an “H” and a “B”. A “B” will be the softest pencil meaning and by softy I mean the graphite in the pencil, it will be soft. And an “H” pencil is a harder pencil. I like to use a harder pencil to start my work because I tend to have a very heavy hand and if I start with a softer pencil, if I make a mistake you have a lot of graphite or already done in the paper and you cannot work over and you cannot really—it is harder to take away than to add more.
So, when I was talking amount the hardness of the graphite and the pencil, the “H” pencils are the hardest so this is a 6H pencil. This is almost—I sometimes use a 9H pencil which is basically the hardest pencil that you can get. And this a 6H pencil, it is about the hardest that you can get. And I am going to show you exactly what the line looks like when you draw with a 6H pencil. It is a very, very hard pencil so it is not going to make a very dark line.
If you want to have a darker line with just one stroke, you want to use a softer pencil which would be the first hardest pencil is an “H” pencil. And this is the “H” pencil and this is the line that an “H” pencil would make. And if you can see here, it is a lot darker than the six “H” pencil and even softer than the “H” pencil is a “B” pencil. And this is actually a two 2B pencil. This is about the third softest pencil that there is available. And you can see this next to the “H” pencil. And this makes a much darker line. And this will go up to about I think a 9B pencil also, very dark line and it could be a lot harder to erase. I frankly do not like to use “B” pencils unless I have a very dark area in a drawing that I would not want to use an “H” pencil for it because it will take a lot longer to actually make it dark.
So, that is about it for pencils.
