Arthritis and Exercise

Rick: Hi! I'm Rick from Orlando. I've been diagnosed for arthritis in both of my knees. What exercise regimen should I be doing?

John Sundy: Well! Rick arthritis in the knees is really one of the most common ways that people will develop arthritis and our goals are really to try to reduce your pain and allow you to get back to a normal level of function as much as possible. This can include a variety of approaches. One of which is exercise. We try to get people to be as active as they can be. When people already have arthritis, weight bearing joint like the knee it's probably better to do low impact exercise such as swimming or on an exercise bike or bicycling, these kinds of activities. This in combination with the appropriate use of medications can go a long way toward improving function and reducing pain. Another goal if person is fat, it encourage people to try to loose weight because we even know that small amounts of weight loss can lead to significant improvement in pain symptoms.
