Ask Dr. Lisa About Vaginal Flatulence Dr. Lisa Masterson: Now Maria, what’s you having going on? Maria: Well, I have been having a problem with vaginal flatulence since where I’m thinking its called? Dr. Lisa Masterson: What happens? Maria: Well I think flatulence because it’s just like when, you know when you pass gas, you know from the bottom. Dr. Lisa Masterson: Okay and you feel like it’s escaping through your vagina. Maria: It’s escaping through my vagina exactly. Dr. Lisa Masterson: And when did this start? Maria: This started after my last child. He’s about eight months now. Dr. Lisa Masterson: Okay. Did you have a vaginal delivery or C-Section? Maria: I had a C-Section with him but I did have – I had four vaginal delivery and two C-Sections, so – Dr. Lisa Masterson: So six babies. Maria: Yeah. Dr. Lisa Masterson: Six babies, alright. What that does is that’s a lot of pressure on that pelvic floor on that vaginal floor and that can stretch that back and weaken it and sometimes you know, with repairs. Did you have any tears and large tears went that through to direct them with any of the previous babies? Marie: With my very first child, it was a vaginal delivery and I did have an episiotomy and some – Dr. Lisa Masterson: Okay, yes. So a repair of tear, that’s vaginal, okay. Maria: Yes I did have a vaginal – okay. Yeah. Dr. Lisa Masterson: Do you feel like heaviness in your vaginal area if you feel like something is going out or – Maria: You know what – it feels like – yeah. It – it almost feels like liquid wants to come out and now that we’re talking about it a little more – Maybe, around the time that I'm supposed to have my period when I’m noticing it the most. Dr. Lisa Masterson: Okay, but with six babies, I can tell you probably that pelvic wall is weakened and that’s why the gas is coming out. There could be a fistula, it could just be weakening and so what you need to do again. Some people might just say do the Kegels that would be an improper thing to just tell you to do that because you need an exam. I can tell to look at that pelvic floor because you may want to – you may need reconstruction of that pelvic floor to bring up some other tissues and the muscles to make it stronger. So, Kegels may not do anything for you – Maria: Okay. Dr. Lisa Masterson: --or they may help depending on what your exam is. So I would say, you got to go to your Gynecologist. Make sure you communicate that to them, have them doing an exam and see exactly what's going on. Maria: I will do that. Thank you so much.
