Asperger Syndome - What is it

Host: Kids about eight, nine years olds in school, has no friends, a little bit awkward, if you are a good student, and someone says you are -- where kids can -- sometimes they are pretty smart, is Autism very centric, when do you start diagnosing that? People have it we called syndrome or a disease, they think it as an insult, all we are trying to spread a group of similar characteristics together and maybe we can find out why, we are not trying to do it and say you are a problem, you are human being who has some issues. What would make you suspect that, that child has some issues that we are going to label that syndrome, what would be --?

Joanne E. Gerenser: I mean I would be very concerned with the lack of friends. I would be concerned with the lack of friends and the sadness about the lack of friends. So there are people who really don't like people, there are ten-year-olds, who could care less; they are very content being at home on their Game Boys and their video games.

Host: Is it okay?

Joanne E. Gerenser: But there are people who are nine and ten, who have no friends and will say I don't have any friend; he is sad about not having friends. Typically, they'll have some literal language confusion, they have a very hard time with the more abstract parts, they will do a lot of what we call as lack of figuring mind.
