Aspirin and Heart Health

Glorianne: Hi! I am Glorianne from Atlanta, Georgia. So should I take Aspirin to prevent a heart attack, and if so, how much and how often?

Matthew Sorrentino: Well, Glorianne as you have heard Aspirin is one of the successful therapies that we have used to try to reduce the risk of both heart attacks and strokes.

However, Aspirin is not completely benign and there can be some complication such as a bleeding risk in certain susceptible individuals. Therefore, we usually recommend Aspirin as a preventive medication in patients who have moderate or high risk of developing heart disease or stroke. That would mean, patients who already have a diagnosis of heart disease or patients who have multiple cardiovascular risk factors. In those cases, we usually recommend 81 milligrams of enteric-coated Aspirin on a daily basis.
