Hi! This is Jessica Anderson of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. And I’d like to share you why Athens, Georgia on the number five spot on our 2009 Best Cities list.
Just 60 miles North East of Atlanta, Athens most southern charm that closes freely its sweet tea and also has an amiable job market. The City’s recent rapine and its top employer is the University of Georgia. In addition to adding jobs, the university makes hospitality a key driver for the economy. On papal weekends, the local population doubles for the Bulldogs home games.
Local eateries serve out everything from fried green tomatoes to kebabs and several have stood the test of time. Weaver D’s is almost just famous for its fried chicken as it is for the slogan automatic for the people which inspire the name of REM’s 1992 album.
Athens has a rich music history which also boast at the beginning that the B-52’s and Widespread Panic. It was named the number one Music Mecca in America by rolling Stone Magazine for its diverse music scene. In any day of the week, you’ll find a long list of live music around town. June brings AthFest, an annual showcase of local bands that play all weekend long.
Medical services round out Athens economic Trifecta. With two large hospitals and a long term care facility, the smallest county in Georgia represents a large portion of healthcare in the area. There might not be a recession proof Athens has all the building blocks that needs to stay afloat in rough times.
