Walter Rohrl on Testing, Race Tracks and Public Roads
Speaker: Have you done a lot of testing in the US?
Speaker: Hmmm. Just uh... The time I was Audi in '88 I have done Trans Am '89, IMSA at this time I was testing quite a lot, but just Porsche yeah, in '93 I have done this GT championship in the States with Bridgestone tires. I was driving a 3.6L turbo but since this time l have never been for testing. Ninety percent I stay on the Nurburgring. We go to Spain in the winter time. And uh... and on ice and snow we go to the Arctic Circle.
Speaker: What is your... what is your favorite race track?
Speaker: Nurburgring. There is... unique. Absolutely unique in the world. But. Then I have to tell you, you have quite a lot of very interesting race tracks in the States. Because they are much more interesting than most... race tracks in Europe like... Hockenheim or Grand prix Nurburgring or Monza. It's all not so interesting. I think it is more interesting if it goes up and down you know, that is... That's car driving.
Speaker: So which is your favorite in the US?
Speaker: Oh it was... Road Atlanta was quite interesting. The atmosphere was quite nice. Then Watkins Glen was nice... Laguna? Laguna Seca? Laguna Seca, of course. Then... uh... This track near San Francisco... it's called.... Oh there's uh... There's infineon... Sears point? Sears point! Sears Point. Sears Point, Lime Rock...
They are always going up and down. That make car driving interesting.
Speaker: A lot of weight shift?
Speaker: Yeah, that's important.
Speaker: How about favorite uh... public road... in all the world?
Speaker: Maybe here in Germany?
Speaker: No, not really. I think the best roads you have in France.
Speaker: Waw.
Speaker: Really. That is fantastic and you have no traffic at all. In France, it is really nice.
Speaker: Over the Alps?
Speaker: Over the Alps, of course, it is very nice. That is something very interesting. Also of course, you have roads in Italy quite nice Roads in the Alps.
Speaker: You have driven the stelvio pass?
Speaker: Yeah.
Maybe not so nice for a car. Bette for a motorcycle.
Speaker: Yes, that's right. We have 48 hairpins!
