Babe Didrikson Zaharias - Profile

Babe Didrikson Zaharias was born on June 26 in 1911 in Texas. She was a top female athlete of her time. She was voted six times by the Associated Press Top Female Athlete of the Year. She was also voted in 1950 the Top Female Athlete of the First half of the 20th century. In 1932, Didrikson entered three events in the Summer Olympics in L.A. She nearly won all three gold, two in javelin and hurdles and the third one she cleared the same height as her compatriot Jean Shiley in the high jump. The jury disapproved of her style and declared Shiley the champion. Shiley and Didrikson later went on to share the medal. By 1935, she picked up golf, a sport for which she is famous for. She went on to compete in the Men’s PGA tournament, a feat no other women would attempt until practically six decades later, she went on to be a celebrity in the 1940s and 50s. However, she died at a young age of 45 while she was at the prime of her career to cancer.
