Daddy Troy: Welcome back to Gear Daddy. I'm your host Daddy Troy and today I'm with Gary from Once Upon a Child. It's a kid and baby clothing, toy and furniture resale shop. It's a great value for new and veteran parents.
Today's episode is the first of a two-part series. Today, we're going to talk about what kind of things you can find at Once Upon a Child. In next week, we're going to talk about the buyback process in which you as a dad can bring your stuff here and actually sell it back to these guys.
Gary: Once Upon a Child is a baby resale store. We purchase items from our customers, they bring them in, they sell them to it. Then we turn around to make sure they're clean, ready to go, put them out in the shelf and resell them.
Daddy Troy: So let's maybe do a little bit of walkabout and you guys can show us the store a little bit and show what kind of things you have. So here we're in kids clothes. You guys sell both girls and boys clothes, actually.
Gary: Right. We go all the way from newborn up to size 14 on the kids.
Daddy Troy: Okay, new parents may not know what size 14 means. Well, how old is that?
Gary: The child's going to be somewhere between 8 and 10 years old.
Daddy Troy: You sell more of girls clothes or boys clothes.
Gary: Always sell more girls clothes. Everybody wants a girl to look nice and cute. Boys are little rough on their clothes.
Daddy Troy: Okay, this is a true story. This week I was going to go buy my kid Jenga. I walked in the store and there it is. I got a great deal on this. Tell me about your toy selection.
Gary: Toy Selection, we're going to keep the toys age appropriate, up to about 8 or 9 years old. We don't get into the computer games. We try to keep it nice and easy for the kids, all the way from the little rattles and little soft plush toys all the way up to the games, puzzles, even DVD.
Daddy Troy: As I was looking around I saw some of the more popular games that parents actually like, like I saw Operation. What other games come through a lot that you see?
Gary: All the old classics: Operation, Twister, Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders and also some of the new games such as V-Tech and Leap Frog.
Daddy Troy: A stroller is one of those big-ticket items that can cost a parent between $50 and $200 but you guys sell used strollers for a fraction of the cost.
Gary: Correct. We carry all the name brands, we carry Graco, Fisher Price, Cosco, Evenflo. We even carry Peg Perego.
Daddy Troy: One of the biggest expenses when setting up your nursery is going to be the crib and you guys sell both used and new cribs.
Gary: Correct. We carry new cribs and used cribs. New cribs will range anywhere from $150 to $500. If you want a used crib we do have those available. They're going to come in somewhere a little less than half or half of the cost as you pay for a brand-new one.
Daddy Troy: So there's real savings there.
Gary: Correct.
Daddy Troy: You guys sell used mattresses?
Gary: No we don't do used mattresses.
Daddy Troy: I think, most moms and dads probably don't want a used mattress anyway.
Gary: We're very concerned about recall items. We keep tabs on CPSC. Anytime that they issue a recall item, we're aware of it immediately.
Daddy Troy: And CPSC stands for Consumer Product Safety Commission?
Gary: If there's a problem with a crib, we don't purchase the crib. If we have one on our floor we take it off immediately.
Daddy Troy: So there are things you don't sell used, car seats, you guys sell used car seats?
Gary: No we don't do the used car seats. There are about 5 million number of recall. The other side of it is, it has never been in a wreck.
Daddy Troy: How about used diaper pails?
Gary: We do use diaper pails. We make sure they're cleaned up. Everything is fine. We don't get them in mid use.
Daddy Troy: Now, just suppose we used diapers in there --
Gary: No.
Daddy Troy: How about used cloth diapers?
Gary: We use cloth diapers. There's actually a demand for them.
Daddy Troy: That's really interesting. Well, thanks so much Gary for showing us around.
