Kim Taylor-DiLeva: Hi! I am Kim Taylor-DiLeva and here is your Sign of the Day, wait! Or if the child is over here on this side, wait goes over here. And it's your flat hands out, your flat hand and you just wiggle your fingers. Wait!
So, here is how I use this in the classroom. Typically what happens in the classroom is, I have a child that I am addressing in front of me, because they have probably done something they shouldn't have done and so we will call him David, for right now. And so, I am talking to David and reprimanding him on what he did or what he needs to do better, or how he needs to go and apologize to someone, whatever the case maybe.
I am usually talking to him and then usually what happens is, another child, someone who is over here; we will call her Sally, and she starts tugging on my clothes going, Ms. Kim, Ms. Kim, Ms. Kim, Ms. Kim, so she has to tell me something. And typically what I was used to do before sign language came into my life, is I said, hold down a minute David. Yes Dally I know, but you have to wait just a second, because I need to finish talking to David, okay, so hold down, just wait one second and I will be right back with you, so I can finish talking to David.
Now meanwhile, when I come back to David and David is often -- he may not even be standing there anymore because he may have left, and I have to get him back over, or he has just totally forgotten what he was over, standing in front me, to talk about in the first place. And then I have to go back and remind him of the whole entire conversation I just had with him all over again, and get him sent on his way and then come over and talk to Sally, who half the time has forgotten what she wanted to tell me in the first place also.
So, it never really worked before in the classroom. So, now what happens is, I am talking to David in front of me, Sally comes over and goes Ms. Kim. I give here the sign wait, which she knows and understands because I taught it to the class. She is now acknowledged and knows that I am going to be right with her. So, I will just stand there and keep signing wait, so that she knows that I am going to be right with her in just a second.
And in the meantime, I can just keep talking and just finish my conversation with David. I never had to stop saying anything. I could just keep on going, saying whatever I had to. And after I finished it, then I could send David off on his way, and say, thank you Sally for waiting so patiently, now what can I help you with?
And so, it works out really nice because I can just keep talking to David in front of me, but acknowledge Sally that she wants my attention, and let her know that I will be right with her.
So, it works great in the classroom and for you parents at home by the way, it works great at home. if you are on the phone, you an sign wait. I might do this all the time, when my son is, mom! Can I have this? Or can you get this? Or can we do this? And whatever it is. But I am talking on phone, I can sign wait and so he is acknowledged to notice that I am busy right now, but I will be right with him.
