Back Pain and Heart Attacks

Brenda: Hi! My name is Brenda and I am from Fairborn, Ohio. I heard that back pain can be connected to the onset of a heart attack. Is this true? And where would I feel it in my back?

Andrew Sama: Thank you for your question, Brenda. It's a very important point that you bring up, because heart attack obviously is a very serious thing. Back pain can be associated with heart attack, but it's not traditionally back pain associated with muscle spasms and these kinds of things. So back pain of heart attack is usually higher in the back, in the mid-back, in chest; it's usually associated with the sense of pressure. If you have any of those symptoms, you should definitely contact at local emergency room or your physician for further clarification of what's causing your symptoms. It can also be associated with shortness of breath or tingling pain that radiates into the jaw.
