Hey! This is Kier Johnson with Catalyst Skateboards. I’m showing you the fundamentals of skateboarding.
Right now I’m going to show you how to kick turn on a quarter pipe. There are two types of kick turns, it’s either front side or back side. Back side is when your regular stance going up and turning on the inside. Front side is actually when you turn. They call it blind side, backwards like this. Front side is a little bit harder, I’m going to go ahead and show you back side first.
I want to approach the ramp with a good bit of speed, ride up and get to your apex of your ride. You’re going to turn inside while pivoting your shoulders and keeping your stance straight. Next you want to turn in and ride back down the ramp while keeping all your speed. This is the most basic trick you want to learn while skating transition.
For front side kick turns, it’s the same deal, you want to approach the ramp with a good bit of speed, ride up to the top and this time, you’re actually going to turn behind you while keeping your weight square centered over the board with your shoulders turned. You’re going to pivot ride back into the ramp and keep your speed.
Now here’s a view from the top, as you can see, riding up the ramp, reaching the top, turning, using your shoulders, keeping your weight squared and riding back into the transition.
Next up, I’m going to show you how to do rock and rolls, both front side and back side as well.
