Male1: This week on Backyard Effects we are going to show you how to become your very own super hero.
[Music playing]
Male1: The guys over at the stack in their infinite comic book wisdom have challenged us to make our own super hero BFX style.
Male2: We have a challenge, look Eric, we bet that there is no way that you could create a super hero costume on your show. And not only that, a super hero costume based on an animal. Come here with an animal based super hero costume and we will make Justin [voice overlapped]
Male3: Yes, he is not here. He can not defend himself.
Male2: That is really nice.
Male3: He will have to wear it.
Male2: But that is our challenge to you so check out www.indymogul.com to see if Eric actually does it.
Male1: I think our mission is pretty clear. Let us spin the Wheel Prosperity to determine our budget. I wonder how much a radioactive spider would cost or gamma rays, probably expensive.
The core of any superhero costume is a good pair of tights. Now if you can not find these, an easy alternative is a pair of thermal underpants. You can find this at any Army Surplus Store for cheap. I got mine for twelve bucks. If they do not have the super colors you are looking for, you can buy some white ones and dye them. You also need a yard of fake brown fur and two yards of stretchy brown fleece found at any fabric store.
Our dashing Hero is going to be called the Flying Squirrel. He will have super squirrel vision, super tree climbing gloves and of course, squirrel wings for super flight. Can Eric bring the Flying Squirrel to life for under $50.00? Stay tuned to find out.
Male2: The fun part about DY is that there is no rules. It is do it yourself, and it means do it yourself. It means you doing it. There is no boss, there is no president, there is no nobody telling you. So you can just have fun with it. It is a process, and when it is done it is all worth it.
Male1: Now, there are a lot of different steps to this build, so let us get cracking. First step: Squirrel gloves. The first thing I did was trace an outline of my hand on the firm material. Repeat this three more times so you have four pieces. I went with the three fingered glove because it would less sewing and looks cool. With the furry side facing in, sew along the edges and turn inside out when done. Now, you want to cover up your super junk with something more than thermal underwear.
Male2: Take some of the fur material and cut a basic diaper shape then use safety pins to attach it to your tights. For the chest piece, I added some more fur. The chest symbol is cut from firm sheets and both are attached using spray glue.
Male1: And now the most important part, the mask and cape. First I sketch the squirrel mask unto a half inch foam sheet then cut it out. Starting with a cheap pair of goggles, I glued more fake fur, first to the goggles then to the foam template. Finish up with some cardboard teeth and a nose. Flip you super hero shirt over and peel back the furry shoulders. Using spray glue on both sides attach our shell all along the arms and shoulders.
