Balding Patterns in Men

Paul: Hi! I am Paul. I am from Treasure Island, Florida. I am interested to know why balding occurs on the top of your head while you still have lots of hair on the sides and the back?

Michelle Hanjani: Well, Paul that's a very good question. Hair loss in men is mainly attributed to hormones and the hair on the top of the head has a specific enzyme that recognizes testosterone and turns it into a more potent form of testosterone called DHT and DHT is able to unfortunately trigger pattern hair loss in men.

This enzyme is really mainly lies on top of the head and on the sides of the head and the back of the head is spared, and doesn't have as much of this enzyme. So that's why when men undergo hair transplant, they take hair from the back of the head and put it on the front of the head because the follicles in the back probably don't have this hormone enzyme.
