Basic Scallop in Salsa Dancing
Hi! I am Terry Dean from Terry Dean Dance Studio. Today we are working on the Salsa. Next we are going to do is the Scallop step. Scallop is a unique little Salsa step so I think you have a lot of fun doing it. The idea with the Scallop is what we call the feinting action and what happens is we are going to do the basic step here and then we were both going to learn how to do a back rock away from each other. When we do back rock we turn away, then she is going to step around and cross her feet and then come back and close. Let me demonstrate that again. So we going to do basic, quick-quick-slow-and, quick-quick-slow-and, quick-quick-slow-and, quick-quick-slow-and, quick-quick-slow, basic Scallop. Its not very hard buts it's little tricky to lead in the beginning. So you are going to have to make sure you got a nice handhold. You do your basic step. Now you have got to turn your body to your left so that leads the lady to the right so you both do the back rock, back rock. Now your turn your body back that leads the lady to step across herself and then she come forward side together, you go back side together. So I am going to demonstrate a little slower and then I am going to break it down. So we are going to do rock-step-step, rock-step-step-back rock, quick-quick-Scallop and out we close and, quick-quick-slow-and, quick-quick-slow, good. So man you are doing a basic step, quick-quick-slow-and, quick-quick-slow-and, instead of doing a forward rock this time, you are going to do a back rock, quick-quick-slow and when you do this back rock what happens is your body turns to the left, quick-quick and then comes back to the right for the slow. So it goes, quick-quick-slow-and then you are going to do back side, close and back into your basic. So it goes, quick-quick-slow-and, quick-quick-slow-and, back rock, quick-quick-slow-and back side together, quick-quick-slow-and, quick-quick-slow. Okay, one more time and quick-quick-slow-and, quick-quick-slow-and, back rock-Scallop back side together. Now when I do this back rock Scallop now watch what I do with my top, back rock, turn my top to the right as I do my little tap because that's what leads the lady to do her little Scallop. So we kind of go rock, step, Scallop and then back side together. So that's why its so important to be able to maintain this top frame without letting to break dance or you don't have to manipulate, all you have to do is do your feet, quick-quick-slow your body will turn, quick-quick-slow and it comes back. Let me do the ladies and then I will demonstrate again. So again ladies are going to do the basic, quick-quick-slow-and, quick-quick-slow, we do the fifth position rock, quick-quick and then he is going to turn you to come around and when you do your feet swivel and then you step forward and swivel the other way and, quick-quick-slow. So it goes rock-step-step, rock-step-close. So from the fifth position I do the back rock, rock step that's my first little feint and notice what happens is when I turn on my supporting leg, my right foot just goes along for the right. Then I step on my right foot and my left foot goes for the right and then I do forward side together and that leads back to my basic step again. So it's a real trick here for the lady but it's not very hard. So it's just a matter of learning these simple little actions of doing the back rock-rock-step, step up, round across yourself and then across yourself again and then forward side to close. One more time so she goes rock, step across yourself, across yourself again and forward side close. I will demonstrate it with Cindy, again we have the basic step rock-step-step, rock-step-step, fifth position she steps across, comes back and close. Basic Scallop and again quick-quick-slow-and, quick-quick-slow-and, quick-quick-slow-and, quick-quick-slow-and, quick-quick-slow and back to the basic. The main thing again is keep this top very round and stay with your partner leaned in, quick-quick-slow-and, quick-quick-slow fall back, she sweeps around and notice that her skirt is bouncing, you really need a bouncy skirt in Salsa so you get a lot of bounce. Again we go quick-quick-slow, quick-quick-slow, she feints, swivels around and, and that's your basic Salsa Scallop.
