Battery Backup for your Computer
Hey everybody, Jason here from the McInTec community bringing you another podcast. So I’m going to do a podcast about UPS. No, not the shipment or the people that postal series whatever it is like FedEx or what- not, not that UPS. I’m talking about UPS, uninterrupted power supply. I want to give you some information in regards if you’re interested or thinking of investing in the UPS for your computer. What it is, is a UPS essentially battery backups when the power goes out. It usually provides you enough time to shut down your computer and how it would shut down and so on.
Now what I recommend is you get any PC. I’ve always been happy with a PC. I bought my first UPS and was named PC UPS about maybe three or four years ago and then I got the second one about maybe a few months after that and I still have them and they still work. APC has always been a great manufacturer and battery backup and actually the other day I just bought another one. This one is a 550VA. It says it’s supposed to supply up to 48 minutes computer shutdown time but on my computer and it says I have 27.
Basically, here’s the question. Is a UPS what you need something to invest in? I say yes, absolutely because if the power goes out if you have a surge, if you have a spike anything, that can damage your computer. I know that if sometimes if my computer goes off, if I pull or unplug it or something and I had before in the past before I have the UPS then power and off it came back on sometimes Windows would not work correctly.
Now, I’ve eventually was able to correct the problem thinking about a couple of things and reboot it but what it can do is you can actually suffer data loss if your power goes out and it’s not UPS or it takes a heat so what I’ve say is if you can invest in a UPS. I paid about $80.00 for this. This is an extra one and they have a 350, I got the 550. So you know I could potentially at one time.
Now what they’re really good for is some areas, some people certainly might end up having tempered power just short as five minutes and 30 seconds. I know right here that happens a lot. I have an UPS which I have them hooked to. I have it hooked to my server downstairs and then my modem and my router downstairs. I have UPS underneath my feet that powers my screen computer and the DV camera and then I have this 550VA, the other two that I’ve just mentioned underneath and looking in downstairs is at 350.
Anyways, now the 550 hooked up to my main computer. I don’t have the screen setup perhaps I should and when it does, the power goes out for let’s say five minutes. Well, usually it will power of my computer in five minutes. Even 30 seconds a long time of power go out for like a split second and you know when you’re typing something happened and all of a sudden the power just flickers like that because often and back on you’re not very happy. I know that. I run to that before where you just get so angry.
Anyways, I had it hooked up to my routers and my modem and my two computers so you got the three UPS’. That way if the power does go out what I can do is if it comes on before the UPS is actually shut down because the battery goes exhausted you’re draining battery which is most cases around this area. The power doesn’t stay off for long.
I can maintain an internet connection with the power off which is really great especially with my laptop. Essentially, what I’ve do is when I got my laptop is I had the UPS hooked up to the router and modem because it’s from the power right now. What I would do is I could just go on the internet through my laptops and set it to Wi-Fi and it has its own built-in batteries that way I got access to the internet.
Well, now I have UPS here and stuff that way is the power does go out for a short period of time. The UPS I have for the server downstairs runs about 20 minutes. It depends on your load and then about 10 or 15 minutes on this. So that you would be able that runs a screen and the DV cam and then 27 minutes for the Quad core computer which is on the 550VA.
So that gives me enough time to be on the shutdown. I could have it set up to auto shutdown and everything. So it’s really good to have one of those because you’ll never know if you have a spike, if you have a power overload or under load you know you say that too under load. If the power goes below a certain voltage the UPS will kick in so there are like different levels saying there’s high, medium and low. Loading the lowest setting, medium and then the high highest protection, so if the voltage goes below a certain level the UPS will click on, if it goes too high the UPS will click on equipping ensuring that your equipment is protective.
Now you can plug in on the things to it if you want. You could plug in and freshen like which would last a long time on the 550VA, a small TV and what-not even the alarm clock. You could find those things to plug them into the net just viewer to computers but it’s nice to have your computer online just in case that happens so that way you’re safe and then you know the computer can shutdown and all your data is saved even hibernate as what I suggest if you got one. Set it to hibernate not standby or shutdown but if you can hibernate it, hibernate it because then you just turn your computer back on. Once it shuts down the power is back on and what-not and then you’re exactly where you were.
For the price range I pay about 80 bucks for this, the 550 VA and you can get a 350VA for about $50.00 or $60.00 and that’s to my area. It varies from area to area that would if you were to go directly to a PC and order it there, you get that cheaper.
Now if this does come with three years warranty so if the battery has a final function or something goes wrong they’ll replace it for free. They’ll send you a whole new unit and that they also guarantee that lifetime connected $75,000.00. So if something went wrong at the UPS and it damages your equipment since you’ve had a product and certain plug in the product Dell replace all your equipment or provide repairs and stuff which is pretty good. APC they’re really great. I totally recommend them they’re top of the line in my books anyways.
I see APC is only replaced there. I totally recommend them to get a better backup and I think if you have not done so you should consider investing in a battery backup. It does not have to be a big one, just in your budget that way you do have a protection you need for your desktop and some of your valuable electronics and stuff that you don’t want damage.
