Welcome to Common Man Cocktail, I’m your host Derrick Schommer and today were going to do the Beach Bum.
This is a recipe—there is a lot of Beach Bum recipe’s all again drastically different. What were going to do this time is borrow our recipe from the GreyGoose.com website where they list their Beach Bum they sent me a PDF file that had a Beach Bum recipe in there that’s what’s I’m going buy so if you’ve had something completely different I apologize maybe we can make that one and it’ll be completely different.
So what were going to do today is were going to have a little grenadine just a dash of grenadine in the final build of the drink. Some Cointreau, this stuff Maraschino liqueur this is really hard for me to find if you can find this you’re in luck, maybe it’s just a New Hampshire some place in Massachusetts doesn’t seem to have it so I special ordered it, now I have it. And that’s the other thing about a lot of liqueur stores they’ll prep the special order for you because they want you’re business. You can’t hurt to ask if you can get them in special order if you can’t get them from you’re local places and of course the Grey Goose La Poire Vodka which is a pear, pear flavored Vodka. So were going to add some pears and cherries a little orange very French this week.
So let’s get, oh before, we actually get started just want to mention that you could win four nice frosted Collins glasses if you go to EverydayDrinkers.TV leave a comment before the end of this month. The month is May and you will be automatically entered for random drawing, it sounds pretty cool you get four of them. So let’s get started.
What were going to do first and I failed to mention that there’s a half ounce of lime juice in here so we’ll just put the lime juice in right away. That way we can reuse our little measuring cup were going to throw all this in our little rocks glass and the reason I think the rocks glass really works for this is your going to find that there is a little potency to the drink. It’s got some vodka in here, it’s got two ounce of vodka, that’s quite a bit of vodka for a small glass like that. That was cool, apparently leaving this in the freezer gives it pressurized properties that I did not know about.
So were going to do two ounces, let’s not drop the nice precious vodka then we had two ounces of that. Were going to do one ounce, no were going to do a half ounce on the maraschino liqueur. A good reason for a half ounce this stuff I haven’t really, I don’t know, it doesn’t smell like maraschino cherries to me. It smells, it smells to me like maybe it’s just me I don’t know but like a grapa with a little earthy cherry like a dark cherry flavor. If you’ve got maraschino cherry smell it, see if you get the same senses. But it’s going to play through this drink, it’s going to cut right through this, this is kind of sweet.
We’ll do a half ounce of the Cointreau, so were going to get a little orange liqueur smells just like you just did a freshly cut orange and just stuck it right into your mouth. Just some right up there, so your going to get that flavor in, you're really getting a lot of flavors from this. There you go, so right now the color is pretty clear let’s put some ice in there that should do it. Lastly, for our garnish call us for sprig of mints. Its raining outside my mint is growing. Still kind of young we just bought this mint plants, I suggest if you really want to do a lot of like mojito’s or things that have basils or different types of spices. Just go out until like Lowes or Home Depot to their gardening sections especially right now because they’re flourishing.
And buy yourself a little plant, put it in the window throw it outside because the mint leaves they just grow really easy and then you’ll always have something that you can use unless you buy a new one in this tiny and then you know like killer anyway. So let’s shake that up, that should do about a 10 second shake and then put some ice in our rocks glass, just a little bit because the glass is pretty small. I guess that this is kind of potent, this might be all that you’re going to need. I noticed a lot of this recipe’s call for orange juice. Which we completely changed this drinks presentation and you know cocktails are all about presentation so you’re going to get something different.
You’re going to get a different, you’re going to get a different style a presentation from this specific drink. Compared to some of the other Beach Bum recipes I saw which looked more like either I don’t know tequila sunrise without as much sunrise or screwdriver, right. This does not look like that. I’ve never actually seen a cocktail that has this type of presentation. It kind of looks like an over cast day maybe with some sunrise going on. Very, very white with just a little red on the bottom, smells, yeah, it actually smells a lot like pears, it makes sense.
It’s a little thick and I’m going to think, I’m thinking that’s because the vodka was in the freezer. And if you’ve put your vodka in the freezer for a few days you’ll notice it thickens up a little bit, no, it doesn’t freeze but it gives it a little more thick properties dull as the alcohols, not in this drink this has alcohol. A little ethanol, you know like if you drink something that has a lot of vodka in it, you’re going to get that ethanol flavoring but only for a few minutes what you’re really start to get is this cherry pear mixture. Not really picking up a lot of orange really, if I think about it maybe I could find some orange but the maraschino and the pears are really dominating the drink.
The orange just gives it a little more dynamic. Overall though not bad, not a bad drink, just its not as strong as the incredible hulk I know a few people said “Hey, you know that face like shock when you drink that” and it was true, it looks innocent. This again does look a little innocent but it is a little strong, I also just want to thank people for all that cool shadows about the new backdrop that we got going here. And everybody was kind of excited to see what it looks like and it’s excited to see our five day episodes. So were going to keep that going, no plans to stopping the five yet episode anytime soon or if ever.
