Being Dad - Worries During the 3rd Trimester

Dakota Mitchell: Hi, I’m Dakota Mitchell. I’m one of the dozens of dads from Being Dad the DVD. Sam Holt: And I’m Sam Holt, one of the many dads from around the world in Being Dad Two. Dakota Mitchell: And this is another installment in The Being Dad Blog Series and today we’re going to be talking about what we’re worried in the third and final trimester? You want a home stretch so things get real here. You start to see the babies bump and everything else so what kind of things that we’re talking about in terms of worries on this one? Sam Holt: Yeah well you know I think that guys now start really you know worrying about the health of the part of the baby you know that’s a big one. I mean I know for me I was and especially at the birth I feel, I mean I was under prepared. I just hadn’t done enough reading in what—I didn’t have enough preparation so for me I was petrified from the day of birth. Dakota Mitchell: From the third trimester what we were trying to practice and work on in the first two were really becoming very, very tangible on this one so we’re really trying to improve the eating habits and improving exercise habits. Sam Holt: Yeah and we can and you know we can see the baby. We know now it’s going to happen. Dakota Mitchell: Right. Sam Holt: It’s actually—that this is going to happen you know it’s on the calendar, it’s real. Dakota Mitchell: Right. Sam Holt: So, the health ones are big one and you know I think that this lead into the importance of going to childbirth classes especially if he’s like most dads hasn’t read a lot of the books and he’s probably isn’t that schooled up, hopefully you’re—of being dad now and he is fine. But if not getting into the birthing classes— Dakota Mitchell: Right, I think that happens to take care of a lot of kind of lacks and a lot of really more specific questions that a guy might have. My mom is an OBGYN and there’s still a lot of things that I didn’t know. Your DVD definitely help me have a much more real world aspect to it and then taking some of the classes, CPR and things like that really let me know that this is for real. And these are the things I need to be aware of in terms of being good dad. Sam Holt: I don’t know that you but I think that you know on of the problems with birth today is that we feel like it’s a bit of a medical emergency and the pregnancy is a sickness. You know I think going to the birthing classes makes you realize that this has been going on you know for thousands and thousands of years and that it’s a natural process. And you know this comes back down to the two of you exploring different why’s of having the baby whether it’s going to be at home, in a birthing center or in a swimming pool or you know in a hospital and working out what’s comfortable for both of you to alleviate both of your fears. Dakota Mitchell: Okay so when we got our—done on the technical aspects and realizing hey this is actually a fun process, we’ve been doing it for thousand of years. We’re going to be talking more about the preparation like the baby’s room, birth plans, or you need to pack on rushing going on a hospital, things like that. Sam Holt: Yeah and I think this is you know as I say, we’re in the home stretch now and even just mentally preparing ourselves for the birth, knowing what we are in for and understanding what her role or his role is going to be in the birth, what you want him to do or what you hope he’ll be able to do in the birth so we’ve created a whole—in this whole topic to help him prepare, it’s a very simple book which he can read over it you know in couple of nuts just 10 nut—well it’s really just tips and lists.
