Belle Xpress VU Satellite Box Review
Aj Vickery: One of the markets that are changing today in North America as fast as any other technology product is the way that we watch television.
There’s a number of different devices coming to the market that allow you to do things like record TV, even watch your TV and of course take advantage of the changing stand in HD-TV as well.
We’re going to look at one of the models today from Bell Express here. It’s a satellite box and this is kind of interesting because they basically have given you a full satellite box that gives you access to HD content. But from PVR perspective, they’d given you some flexibility. They allow you to attach in that external hard drive to this device to record HD-TV. It’s called Bell Express 6141 satellite setup box.
Lindsay Smith: A lot of things I really like about this particular box is it actually got the ability to have over 63 HD channels. And for those you that know anything about the HD boxes so far, a lot them only carry 15-20 channels that are a lower end and then you can also get your standard television so that we able to have that options and so many channels in there is really taking it to the next level in terms of digital and high definition television.
Some other things that we really need is it’s got an interactive component called iTV which is unique to the Bell Express few model. And what that means is you can actually surf different channels like the weather network which are interactive, CBC news, your sports. And rather than just being watching on one side of it, you’re kind of interacting it similar to the way you would interact with it over the internet.
Aj Vickery: Absolutely. And I think they have a whole concepts behind iTV is an excellent one because what it does is it really gives the business user the ability to watch television. But if they don’t have a lot time, you can actually jump into certain programs and access the information that you want to get. So if you’re quickly running out the door and you just want to get the top new lines, iTV is a great solution for that.
One other things about not including the hard drive in the unit as you can see behind this here is that it also gives it a small form factor which works really well for most living rooms because it does not—that the hard drive built into it. It’s a smaller form system and it allows you to again, attach any type of USB hard drive up to 750MB right now. So a 750GB right now giving you huge storage and that’s bigger than anything currently we see on the market right now.
Lindsay Smith: And as well, I mean its got your standard cable options but the HDMI obviously is a great—the one cable that just basically plugs in to the box then goes through the back, through the wall into the television like you can see here. You can’t see the—
Aj Vickery: Then you want to maintain that digital signal with HDMI and make sure that you have a good HDMI cable when you do that but that gives you the digital sound, the digital photo on the highest resolution capable, which is about 720 peered 10i. So, we’re still not getting the 1080p signals out of these boxes yet but that’s something that we’ll probably in the future generations.
Lindsay Smith: And for those of you who aren’t familiar with or just kind of learning about HD TV, one thing to keep in mind as a regular television set is about 480i which— And the “I” stands for interlace. So what that means is that you’re getting two pictures together. And as we move into high definition television, we’re looking at the being able to have one single picture quality when we go to the progressives so 720p meaning the progressive image which is easier on the eye in a lot cases.
Aj Vickery: And one last thing, keep in mind. This is a satellite box so you are going to have to be able to put an external satellite dish outside of your house or on top of your roof and it does need to point a certain direction so you can work with your sort of Bell Express, few people to figure whether or not you can have it.
