Hey, guys how is it going? Today, I’m going to be talking about emergency blankets both the heavy duty reusable kind and the disposable ones.
These are an excellent item to keep in your survival kit. Many people believe that they only have one use and that’s to keep you warm but that’s not true there’ s multiple uses for these blankets and I’ll be going over those and the benefits of the blankets.
These blankets are made out of Mylar which is a material invented in 1952 and it’s basically a polyester film and it reflects heat back at your body. It doesn’t create heat but it will reflect the heat that you create and reflect it back towards your body.
All right, so the two different kinds of space blankets are the disposable ones and the heavy duty reusable ones. The disposable ones can also be reuse if you’re careful with them. They are pretty strong but they can be rift and burn.
All right, I’ve open up the larger blanket just say you’ve got to look at what it looks like. The reflective side is the side that you would want on your body and the other side is red. Red or orange is a good color because you can use it as a signal panel to signal for your rescuers.
The heavy duty space blanket has holes in the corners otherwise, known as grommets which can be use to attach cord or tent pegs. You can definitely use this to make a shelter. There’s a lot of different ways and different set-ups you could make a shelter with this and I’ll probably make a video sometimes to demonstrate your different options when it comes to shelter making with a space blanket.
Another way to these blankets can be use is to keep your heating and insulate your body. Obviously, you do that by wrapping it pretty tightly around your body like so. In the winter time this would be an excellent option but you’ll have to remember that these blankets do not breathe so any moisture will get trap inside the blanket and probably absorb into your clothing and that could be a death sentence in cold conditions if you’re wet. You’ll get hypothermia pretty quickly and that’s bad you just want to be wet in cold weather.
Another really good way to use one of these blankets would be to catch rainwater for drinking purposes also known as a rain catch and apparently set that up and here but someday I will make a video demonstrating making rain catches. Basically, you would have it so the rainwater would follow down into your container.
Another way this emergency blanket can be use is as a fire reflector and that basically means what the name says. A fire reflector reflects heat from your camp fire back at you. Most commonly used in a survival scenario where maybe you’re lost in the woods or something and you don’t have your tent. You would want to make a fire reflector if you are in cold conditions and you can use these space blankets to do that which I will also demonstrate in an outdoor video. The thing about the fire reflector is you don’t want it too close to the fire because the Mylar will melt both with the heavy duty blanket and the disposable ones.
Another way this can be use sort of ties in with the shelter but they can be use as a windbreak which means to stop the wind from blowing on you especially if it’s really cold or if it’s a sandstorm or something. The wind will not penetrate these blankets, the disposable ones or the heavy duty ones. So, it will definitely be use as windbreak.
Also, this can be use in a sudden thunderstorm or rain shower as a poncho or just a quick shelter to throw over your body. With the disposable blankets they also make a mummy bag. It’s basically sleeping bag of pouch to put your body in. Those are more expensive.
These one are only about $3.00 or $4.00 you can find them almost anywhere. I would recommend the MPI outdoor sprints. I’ve found that they are the best so far. They have directions and everything on them. You can find one that actually has a survival instructions and pictures written on them. I have before and they are pretty good, but all of these are pretty much the same if it’s Mylar it’s Mylar, but I prefer the better quality MPI outdoor brand.
So, like I said you can find these for about $3.00 or $4.00. The mummy bag ones that I was talking about are about $10 and with those you’ll basically only have one option and that’s just to keep yourself warm in it. I mean, yeah you could use it as a rain catch but the ones that will open up are definitely more effective and you’ll definitely have more options with the disposable ones that open up fully.
So, I will definitely recommend these and not the mummy bag. They’re cheaper and you have more options. Also, I would definitely recommend getting the heavy duty ones that you can use over and over again.
Now, that’s getting cold where I am and winter time is coming I pretty much always have this one with me and the reason I have two of the disposables in my survival kit is because of the various options that you have with them. You could use one as a ground sheet to lay on and you could use one as your roof or you could use one as a blanket to hold your warmth in and one as a fire reflector.
So, having two of them gives you more options. You can use one for one thing and one for anything thing that’s why I have two space blankets in my survival kit. So, like said earlier you can find these blankets specially the disposable ones almost anywhere. When you get them pick up since they are so cheap $3.00 or $4.00 pick up like four or five of them and give some to your love ones. You can keep them in your car or boat whatever, all your backpacks, your gear.
It doesn’t hurt the disposable ones are really lightweight maybe like four ounces at the most and you just have so many options with them that it just makes it worth it. That’s one thing when I add stuff to my survival kit that I look for is something that has many different purposes and this is one of those items.
All right, guys so that’s it on my emergency survival space blanket video. Thank you guys for watching, feel free to add comments to the video of your own ideas and things you’ve use the blankets for in the past, so we can all learn from each other. And thank you guys for watching, thank you for your subscription, comments and excellent ratings and I’ll talk to you guys later, bye.
