Audra Lowe: Look at those frozen meals, there quick their easy but they can also be sabotaging your diet. Nutritionist and other Keri Glassman shows Rhiannon, the best choices for your next trip to the grocery store. It’s all in to day’s Shop Smart. Rhiannon Ally: Thanks Audra there are dozens to choose from and when you’re walking to frozen food isle it’s hard to know which was are good for you and which one is actually taste good too. Consumer reports say it has a dozens of them and we’re showing you there top picks. Keri Glassman is joining us today and it is important to note, none of the meals they tasted got an excellent score in taste or nutrition but some did score very good which is pretty good. Keri Glassman: Yeah that is pretty good and it doest surprise me that they didn't get an excellent any of them because again we really should be eating fresh whole foods but these are good for emergency situations. Rhiannon Ally: Now so we shouldn’t be eating these for every single meal of the day. Keri Glassman: We should not, we should really use these to bridge the gap when maybe we are not prepared of our plans went array. Something happens or any situation where we say okay, we want to at least to control portions. Rhiannon Ally: Let’s get started first stop we Kashi’s Chicken Florentine you like this one. Keri Glassman: I like Kashi it’s 290 calories. Rhiannon Ally: Not bad. Keri Glassman: Kashi general use is pretty clean ingredients it’s less process than some of the other’s and I do like frozen meals to be about 300 calories. If you need to add on a few extra calories, have a side salad but in for most people it’s a good portion. And the flavors are nice I do like Kashi a lot. Rhiannon Ally: They tend to be a little bit better now healthy choice Cafe Steamers Roasted Beef Merlot—sounds fancy. Keri Glassman: You know what it. Rhiannon Ally: So 210 calories too. Keri Glassman: 210 calories which is amazing for obviously having red meat. And so many people when they crave red meat they go out to the local steak house and they completely over indulge. Rhiannon Ally: Uh hum. Keri Glassman: For so for some people when are trying to diet, it is actually a good way to say okay I am craving red meat but I know if I go there I am going to over indulge let me at least control the calorie. So it’s a way to satisfy the craving and control the calories. Rhiannon Ally: That Kansa’s City strip is not going to be 200 calories. Keri Glassman: Exactly. Rhiannon Ally: Next stop we have Lean Cuisine café classic steak tips Portobello. This one is only 160 calories the best one out there for calories. Keri Glassman: It is and there is only 2 grams of saturated fat which o also like because obviously when we eat red meat we’re going to get saturated fat. So only 2 grams of saturated fat and not 160 calories that’s really the amount of calories we need for our snack. Rhiannon Ally: Okay and next stop we have Lean Cuisine Café Classics shrimp Alfredo. This one comes in 260 calories. Keri Glassman: Any Alfredo meal out of the restaurant could cause you your calories for not only one day but possibly two or three days. Rhiannon Ally: Uh hum. Keri Glassman: In terms of satisfying a craving to bridge the gap between your other healthy meals. Not everyday not all the time but this is a good way again to bridge that gap satisfy that craving. Rhiannon Ally: Now, I like the last three because they are all vegetarian. I am not vegetarian but we’re eating frozen meals, I tend to kind of gravitate towards these. First stop Santa Fe Style Rice & Beans by smart Ones. Keri Glassman: Most people when they eat rice and beans they’re having it as a side dish which is good because rice and beans are a complete protein. I mean when you’re getting all of your essential amino acids. But the bad thing there is the people that unusually have it with another part of their meal. Whether its fish or chicken or steak really rice and beans has it’s own can be a complete meal and this will at least give you again the portion control and 300 calories for that one. Rhiannon Ally: Yeah that’s not bad 310 for the next one or 340 rather Kashi Black Bean Mango. Keri Glassman: I like this one because there such a lots of flavor in there. There is and again like you said, the 340 calories, so it’s a tiny bit more caloric but lots of fiber in there. There seven grams of fiber and there is only one gram of saturated fat which is the least amount of saturated fat of all of all of these meals. Rhiannon Ally: Wow not bad. And this last one sounds delicious it is Healthy Choice Portabella’s Spinach Parmesan, 270 calories. Keri Glassman: This is an easy way to at least change it up add a little bit a variety in flavor. Because when you do have variety and you do have flavor your more likely to stick to your diet. Rhiannon Ally: And one thing important to mention on all these, this have a lot of sodium. Keri Glassman: They do, they all had about 25% of the sodium you really need in a day. Rhiannon Ally: Oh. Keri Glassman: So they all have a lot of sodium, so again another reason we shouldn’t be eating these for all of our meals. Use them for emergency situations and at least just control the portions.
