Best Home Remedies from Around the World
Dr. Travis Stork: So we scour the globe to find the best home remedies for your health and beauty woes and you’re coming along for the trip. First stop is Mexico. So in Mexico believe it or not, they used garlic to treat a sore throat. One option, they put honey and garlic on toast but another is believe it or not, gargling with garlic. So the question is “Does it work?” Well, believe that garlic does have antiseptic properties but you know I got to try it up for myself and oh men, don’t try this if you’re a vampire.
Dr. Andrew P. Ordon: Well do you have sore throat?
Dr. James M. Sears: Yeah
Dr. Travis Stork: All right. Who wants to kiss me? I’m going to tell you, I’m going to keep eating garlic when I’m sick but I will never put it in my mouthwash ever again.
Dr. James M. Sears: Yeah, I think it looks nasty.
Dr. Travis Stork: It is. Do you want to --
Dr. James M. Sears: Smoochy --
Dr. Travis Stork: So we’re going to move on to Sweden. Swedish gears have a remedy and it’s called blueberry soup and they used blueberry soup for a couple of different things. One is to treat a common cold and believe it or not, the other is for diarrhea. The question is “does it work?” And I’ll tell you for cold it’s a great option because it’s full of antioxidant which means it’s great for boosting our immune system and I’m going to give a little whirl.
Dr. James M. Sears: And garlic -- the after taste
Dr. Travis Stork: Nothing like blueberry with garlic in your mouth. That’s good. But the key treatment for diarrhea believe it or not is fluids. Blueberry soup over fluids, they got blueberries in it so hey, why not try it. I like shrimp’s touch. Let’s move on to another part of the world. We’re going to move to India.
Dr. James M. Sears: Now, you probably heard of the word “ayurveda” it’s the ancient Hindu Science of Health and Medicine and they actually have an interesting cure for nosebleeds. Now, what happens in a nosebleed is you’ve got this blood vessels in your nose that help warm and humidify the air you breathe kind of help it be more healthy for you but they’re so close to the surface that they’re easily damaged and you know, you got a nosebleed. But it’s interesting, they cut a piece of onion and you just hold it up to your nose and the vapors -- and we know onion actually access an anticoagulant so the vapors from the onion kind of --
Dr. Travis Stork: Better tip from an ER doc and EENT and everyone else is apply direct pressure.
Dr. James M. Sears: Give it a pinch. Don’t lean back.
Dr. Travis Stork: If the onion doesn’t work which I have my doubts --
Dr. Andrew P. Ordon: Or put the onion right in your nose (Laughter). Just kidding.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Oh, wow, that was --
Dr. Travis Stork: So I want to move on to one of the most beautiful parts of the world, the Himalayas with Lisa here.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: There you go. Well, this is going to be a fantastic and you’re going to love, it’s called the sea buckthorn berry and this is called the holy fruit and it’s cherished by native Tibetans. And it comes in teas, it comes in liquid forms, it comes in lotions and it’s really chock-full, it’s loaded full of omega fatty acids, the 369 and a lot of vitamins and this is really great, a nutritive polish for your skin, your hair, your nails. So this is kind of your holy fruits beauty secret.
Dr. Travis Stork: Does it help neutralize onion and garlic breath?
Dr. Lisa Masterson: I think it’s supposed to taste pretty good.
Dr. Travis Stork: Can I drink this?
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Yeah
Dr. Travis Stork: Cool. Now, we’ve hit jackpot.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: There you go.
Dr. Travis Stork: That is good stuff
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Sea buckthorn berry.
Dr. Travis Stork: So Sea buckthorn berry.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Yes
Dr. Travis Stork: I like that.
Dr. Travis Stork: Let’s head to the Middle-East?
Dr. Andrew P. Ordon: That’s right. We’re going to Israel now, right? We’re talking about the Dead Sea. In Israel, people consider the Dead Sea, the salt of Dead Sea to have special healing properties. We’re here today with Raisa.
Dr. Travis Stork: Welcome.
Dr. Andrew P. Ordon: From the Yuki Sharoni Spa and our patient Kara. She’s here -- and I’ve been to the Dead Sea. I’ve done this.
Dr. Travis Stork: I’ve seen pictures of you.
Dr. Andrew P. Ordon: Yeah, we have pictures.
Dr. Travis Stork: It was Cleopatra’s Spa
Dr. Andrew P. Ordon: And it’s unique because the salt content of the Dead Sea is 27% compared to 3% in the sea. There are 12 minerals that are found in the Dead Sea that are only found in the Dead Sea. So this is a special stuff. I wouldn’t recommend putting it on your salad because this is real salt. So Kara what are you feeling there?
Kara: Lot of tingling. My skin feels really, really smooth and I definitely have an issue with dry skin so this is an exfoliate right?
Dr. Andrew P. Ordon: Well, what she’s getting is a major exfoliation here that’s why her skin feels dry. This exfoliation with the salt is going to get rid of all those dead skin cells and give her natural smooth luster to our skin.
Dr. Travis Stork: So these are great options across the world. You can try them at home. I don’t recommend garlic, gargling with it before a date. That’s the only thing I’m going to say.
