Derrick Schommer: Welcome to Common Man Cocktails. I am your host Derrick Schommer, co-host here Jennifer Schommer.
Jennifer Schommer: Can I talk?
Derrick Schommer: Do it.
Jennifer Schommer: I am Jennifer Schommer.
Derrick Schommer: I am Derrick Schommer and we are here for Rum Tasting Number Two. If you’ve watched last episode, first off, if you’re watching this, you Googled it and it came up, go back to the episode before. Otherwise, it’s not going to be as fun. But we’re going into our Rum Tasting Part 2. This time we have our winner thus far.
Jennifer Schommer: Bacardi.
Derrick Schommer: Bacardi Superior.
Jennifer Schommer: Eventhough we didn’t want it to win.
Derrick Schommer: We didn’t really want it to win.
Jennifer Schommer: Unless they want to sponsor our show.
Derrick Schommer: They’re pretty big. If you want a sponsor show, here are great reason because—
Jennifer Schommer: And then you can win.
Derrick Schommer: Our palates will love your product. We’re just kind of selling our souls here. And then we’re going to look at Serralles which is I believe the distillery; Don Q Cristal.
Jennifer Schommer: Also a Puerto Rican rum.
Derrick Schommer: Also a Puerto Rican rum; direct competition people. And Brave Spirits which is not a competing product but it’s American made. Made in—whether it’s distilled or not in Pennsylvania, the company is located in Pennsylvania. We’ve interviewed them on the podcast, so you can go back to everydaydrinkers.com and look for that podcast. Search Brave Spirits podcast. You go to iTunes. And what these guys do which is cool is they donate $2.00 towards the charities to support men and women in the Americas military, fire depart—police department. It’s not a joke. They are real people who authentically like to talk about their charities and what they do for the community, they hold a bunch of stuff. So honestly, I kind of want them to lead the charge because of the efforts they put in, whether they will or not, I don’t know. There is still a new product. They are still working it out. They have master distillers that have done this for years.
Jennifer Schommer: And we put water.
Derrick Schommer: We put water. So, we did an ounce of each. These are one brand. This is anther brand. This is another brand. Like we said yesterday, they are all randomly screwed up. So, we don’t know what goes where.
Jennifer Schommer: Let’s get started.
Derrick Schommer: With a half ounce of water. So, they bring out the alcohols.
Jennifer Schommer: Sweet. Not a lot of alcohol.
Derrick Schommer: First thing, I thought it was spring water. It smells fresh and sweet.
Jennifer Schommer: You’re obviously not smelling a lot of alcohol.
Derrick Schommer: No, it is definitely sweet.
Jennifer Schommer: Sweet; definitely sweet.
Derrick Schommer: Based on it, I’m going to say this is Bacardi. All at room temperature, I don’t know. It’s got a little alcohol in it.
Jennifer Schommer: It’s definitely alcohol which builds up. It wasn’t burning at first but now it’s burning.
Derrick Schommer: It’s gets a little—it’s like a Mexican burrito when you bite in, you’re like or maybe a—
Jennifer Schommer: A jalapeno.
Derrick Schommer: A jalapeno where you bite it and it’s not—you’re like, ‘oh that’s not bad’ and then you’re like, ‘okay, water.’ So, you know a nice hot, not maybe, it’s probably not as intense as a jalapeno.
Jennifer Schommer: But it’s like.
Derrick Schommer: Definitely so later on.
Jennifer Schommer: Yeah, but I mean like in your mouth like that’s not yeah
Derrick Schommer: Yeah, it’s crisp.
Jennifer Schommer: Yeah, it’s—
Derrick Schommer: It seemed well-defined. I think it’s extremely tasty. Like I like it.
Jennifer Schommer: Yeah.
Derrick Schommer: I am happy with that.
Jennifer Schommer: It’s sweet. We’re getting a little bit of sweet.
Derrick Schommer: Where’s my pen? Can you grab me my pen. The pineapple again; it seems like the rum just kind of give you that pineapple essence.
Jennifer Schommer: But this almost has like a full body taste where I didn’t get that.
Derrick Schommer: Completely full.
Jennifer Schommer: Yeah. I didn’t get that in the first round we did.
Derrick Schommer: Maybe a little.
Jennifer Schommer: Maybe.
Derrick Schommer: No. It’s like all the way through. It’s got a good sweetness from the start to the finish. The fire, it doesn’t, the fire doesn’t last too long, you know. I don’t have any burn at all.
Jennifer Schommer: No but it does—
Derrick Schommer: My tongue is numb. My tongue is a little numb.
Jennifer Schommer: Like you drink it and it’s like, ‘oh not too bad’ and there is —
Derrick Schommer: Yeah. Then it died down, fairly quickly. But still—I still have the taste. I just don’t have the burn.
Jennifer Schommer: Right. You still get that taste.
Derrick Schommer: So, you are to choose the number.
Jennifer Schommer: I am going to go 92.
Derrick Schommer: 92, okay. Now be aware, I am going to say. I am going 94 because I like it and it—
Jennifer Schommer: I thought it was good.
Derrick Schommer: I think it’s going to be slightly embarrassing if it’s the same one as yesterday and I rated higher.
Jennifer Schommer: And you rated higher.
Derrick Schommer: But maybe—
Jennifer Schommer: That maybe bad ha?
Derrick Schommer: No. Well, it’s truth. We can’t lie, right?
Jennifer Schommer: It’s blind.
Derrick Schommer: That is what we are right now. That’s how it tastes, so be it. Yeah I know; nothing. Yeah, there’s little sweetness.
Jennifer Schommer: Yeah, not much though. I get more alcohol.
Derrick Schommer: I’m not getting a lot of anything.
Jennifer Schommer: Mostly alcohol in it.
Derrick Schommer: Yeah, if you breathe in deep, you get a rubbing alcohol.
Jennifer Schommer: Yeah. Rubbing alcohol but—
Derrick Schommer: It doesn’t really taste—their smell or taste it—it’s not pleasing
Jennifer Schommer: I don’t really get too sweet.
Derrick Schommer: No. But I don’t think they were going to be impressed by telling people it smells like rubbing alcohol.
Jennifer Schommer: Maybe it’s that.
Derrick Schommer: Not that most people drink light rum straight.
Jennifer Schommer: Right.
Derrick Schommer: But my theory—
Jennifer Schommer: Did you pour in vodka instead?
Derrick Schommer: I did not pour any vodka.
Jennifer Schommer: Okay.
Derrick Schommer: You would know because I think it would mean more like on your face.
Jennifer Schommer: Do you have a theory?
Derrick Schommer: I have a theory that if we find what we think is the best rum; that would be when you want a cocktail. Besides obviously, ‘Quentin Marty or Quentin Marty’ which is all rum based or what not I think it is.
Jennifer Schommer: We’ll have to test that theory.
Derrick Schommer: And we will. Maybe there’s a video at the end. It’s got a good texture, a little fire.
Jennifer Schommer: A lot more burn.
Derrick Schommer: Then now yeah.
Jennifer Schommer: Then I think even from that one.
Derrick Schommer: I think this is Bacardi because it’s got that chocolate—
Jennifer Schommer: They don’t get the chocolate but you know what?
Derrick Schommer: Nope.
Jennifer Schommer: I don’t really get anything but burn.
Derrick Schommer: Really? Guess because you have that so that has tainted your—
Jennifer Schommer: It may have.
Derrick Schommer: Your impression of what rum is.
Jennifer Schommer: I don’t think I did this.
Derrick Schommer: Try it. Bring our palate to a different place in time, a little apple. I taste apple. I’m just kidding. Now, there is much burn.
Jennifer Schommer: Yeah. Not like wow! Like I was lost in, but still there though. It taste a little bit more but I don’t know what it is. It’s got a little bit more of a taste but still not much more.
Derrick Schommer: You don’t like it? Or has that ruined your paining a bit? Because you’ve got, I mean if—and the other thing is if this is Bacardi, then if it’s got a lower rating because of your experience of this, I think that’s natural.
Jennifer Schommer: Right.
Derrick Schommer: Then you’re going to degrade something based in the fact that you’ve had something better.
Jennifer Schommer: And I think I’m going to go yeah just about 85.
Derrick Schommer: 85. Ouch.
Jennifer Schommer: Not that—with it.
Derrick Schommer: I’d say 89 because I like the aftertaste. I like the little, that chocolate thing and I like the thickness. I think I get thickness.
Jennifer Schommer: Really?
Derrick Schommer: Yes!
Jennifer Schommer: Can we drink at the same one?
Derrick Schommer: No! Of course we are—
Jennifer Schommer: All right.
Derrick Schommer: Your palate is different, maybe you don’t like it. I’m going to base line.
Jennifer Schommer: Wow. That one has like no smell at all?
Derrick Schommer: What are you talking about? This smells like caramel.
Jennifer Schommer: Okay. I don’t think we’re drinking the same ones.
Derrick Schommer: I just poured some of my chin. Do I look like a retard? I poured it on my chin.
Jennifer Schommer: No comment.
Derrick Schommer: You don’t smell caramel and a little burn.
Jennifer Schommer: It smells like alcohol.
Derrick Schommer: Okay. I get caramel.
Jennifer Schommer: No, I don’t smell caramel. I don’t smell anything.
Derrick Schommer: Candy, caramel candy. Caramello. Caramello.
Jennifer Schommer: If you say so.
Derrick Schommer: Okay. Again, it’s not too thick and not too thin.
Jennifer Schommer: It’s so light in your mouth.
Derrick Schommer: Yeah.
Jennifer Schommer: It’s almost like you drink—not taste wise but viscosity wise, it’s like you’re drinking water.
Derrick Schommer: That’s not good.
Jennifer Schommer: Not taste wise I said.
Derrick Schommer: Viscosity wise though.
Jennifer Schommer: Yes. It’s like thin too me but—
Derrick Schommer: I thought it was kind of medium. My cheeks are on fire. I don’t think it’s bad though. I think it’s got more taste regardless of what you think of the smell. I still think it smells like caramel, caramel, caramel, caramel.
Jennifer Schommer: Not a bad taste. I still don’t smell the caramel but I think I would go—
Derrick Schommer: It’s a little sour, actually.
Jennifer Schommer: Yeah, it is a bit sour.
Derrick Schommer: I kind of not like it now.
Jennifer Schommer: It can do an 87 on that one. I still think it’s a little bit better than this one.
Derrick Schommer: What happened? It’s got really foul, 87.
Jennifer Schommer: Just slightly better than the one we just had.
Derrick Schommer: You think?
Jennifer Schommer: I did, that is why I rated it that way.
Derrick Schommer: I’m going 80, oops it’s not an 80, 88.
Jennifer Schommer: It’s easy, you still rated it higher than me or lower than—
Derrick Schommer: What is the deal? It’s all my scores are always better than your scores. You are harsh. You do not—you are very picky when it comes to silver rum.
Jennifer Schommer: My mouth is still on fire.
Derrick Schommer: It is. Yeah. I see the right order I think. So, what we have is—we have 88, 87, 89, 85 which is the biggest difference 94, 92, obvious winner, second place, first place. If this is Bacardi, we’re going to look bad.
Jennifer Schommer: Wait, wait.
Derrick Schommer: What? No?
Jennifer Schommer: Oh yeah, okay.
Derrick Schommer: 89, 85, 88, 87.
Jennifer Schommer: Right.
Derrick Schommer: This is actually better, sorry, right 80, 87, 85, 89.
Jennifer Schommer: Yes. So, this one is—
Derrick Schommer: Second place, first place.
Jennifer Schommer: Last.
Derrick Schommer: Last place.
Jennifer Schommer: Right. So, what is that?
Derrick Schommer: Are you sure? You think that’s—yeah, I guess you’re right. We we’re closer on this one on high.
Jennifer Schommer: We’re closer, yeah.
Derrick Schommer: On high.
Jennifer Schommer: There’s only one different—
Derrick Schommer: On this one. So, this would be second.
Jennifer Schommer: Right, right.
Derrick Schommer: And this is last.
Jennifer Schommer: Right.
Derrick Schommer: Excellent. Oh!
Jennifer Schommer: Oh.
Derrick Schommer: Don Q.
Jennifer Schommer: Don Q.
Derrick Schommer: It comes in last place.
Jennifer Schommer: Poor Don Q.
Derrick Schommer: But I gave it a better score.
Jennifer Schommer: That is weird.
Derrick Schommer: No, no. I gave it a better score. I gave Don Q a better than this but together are comparative.
Jennifer Schommer: Right.
Derrick Schommer: The numbers are better with this one. So overall, I like this one better.
Jennifer Schommer: Because I didn’t like Don Q.
Derrick Schommer: You don’t like Don Q? She doesn’t like it. Don Q. It’s her.
Jennifer Schommer: It’s not that I don’t like Don Q. Compared to everything up here, I didn’t think it was as good.
Derrick Schommer: This made your impression of that taste not as good.
Jennifer Schommer: Right.
Derrick Schommer: Overall, I mean that’s what it did. This one taste better than this one.
Jennifer Schommer: Right.
Derrick Schommer: So and this one came in second which really is probably stronger because we had a good, not so good for you and then you came up with a better score. Brave Spirits.
Jennifer Schommer: Men.
Derrick Schommer: Number two. Oh—that leaves Bacardi as number—
Jennifer Schommer: Bacardi.
Derrick Schommer: We gave it a better score, 94, 92. I think I went up on scoring that. I think even went up by one..
Jennifer Schommer: I think I want it better up by one, yeah. I think I gave it a 90 or maybe two, they gave a 90 last time.
Derrick Schommer: I don’t know.
Jennifer Schommer: Or 91, I don’t remember.
Derrick Schommer: We’ll have to check the tape but in the end, what we have come back is Bacardi still.
Jennifer Schommer: What the heck?
Derrick Schommer: Still ahead.
Jennifer Schommer: I am thinking next tasting, they’re going down.
Derrick Schommer: I don’t know. The next tasting is too gold so it’s going to be—
Jennifer Schommer: Yeah.
Derrick Schommer: It’s going to be tough.
Jennifer Schommer: Well, there are still light rums.
Derrick Schommer: They’re light rums but they are kind of tinged golden color.
Jennifer Schommer: So, you’re going to know which one is Bacardi.
Derrick Schommer: No. We just want to look at the—we won’t look at the presentation because they are clear. We’ll try and ignore the fact if we can. Overall though, we’re going to say Don Q, third place. Brave Spirits, second place but Bacardi wins overall. I think personally, we’d take Don Q over Brave Spirits blindly, you would not.
Jennifer Schommer: I didn’t, yeah.
Derrick Schommer: No jury rules, Brave Spirits takes number two. I guess that’s it.
Jennifer Schommer: I am your host Jen Schommer.
Derrick Schommer: I am your co-host Derrick Schoomer.
Jennifer Schommer: Oh, you’re a co-host now?
Derrick Schommer: I got degraded.
Jennifer Schommer: You must have.
Derrick Schommer: Wait, it’s co-host is the same. It’s no. What is a co-host? I don’t know. We’re both the same. We’re equivalent. We’re teaching you how to drink. What are we doing?
Jennifer Schommer: We’re teaching you how to drink.
Derrick Schommer: Light rums.
