Meagan: Blown glass can be found in many stores, but did you know that you can have it costume-made? Neither did I, until I visited glass artist Casey Highland at Louisville glassworks.
I am hitting the road, searching for answers and finding great design. It is a quest for beauty, function, and of course, inspiration.
The day I visited Casey, he was busy making a costume glass pendant like. Yes, you can get blown glass pieces made just for you, whether it is a light fixture bolt or a vase.
How much of this stuff do you actually do of the commission versus creating on your own?
Casey: While it is a commission definitely support like the create and lovers so, may say out of the year, I am on my dig a month, made it four weeks to do a creative work.
Meagan: Really? That is it?
Casey: And typically, it is like more of a, you know, you fill in, you just get it in the end.
Meagan: Really? So then somebody comes to you and they just say, oh, could you make me a light or could you make me a bowl or how does that happen?
Casey: Well, I mean, my business I do all sort of things, I do consignment, wholesale, I just came from a trade show, I do like lots of commissions like this. You really do everything across the board. I mean, my business is about 4-years-old so you really do everything that you can for the time being to really support the studio so that you can do like create.
Meagan: How cool is that? You can have a one of kind piece of blown glass in your home enabling an artist to pursue his or her passion. All you have to do is call a glass blowing artist and tell them what you want.
So if you were to have somebody come to you, would you expect them to bring the to make something?
Casey: in just of the hands, like I had a really nice project embracing in the last year like doing like a large chandelier, and it came to me basically with the budget, a size and the colors they wanted, then everything in between was kind of mine. And so that was a lot of fun because it was large scale project, it was a nice budget to work with and so I thought like I really were doing to put a lot of hand into it.
Meagan: When you call the artist, be sure to have set budget, color swatches, pictures of your space and an idea of what you want, but also give them some artistic freedom, you might come up with the good idea you would have never thought of, and let me tell you, when the blown glass is complete, it will instantly become a showpiece that no one else in the world has.
