Welcome to the Sunday night shooter’s editions of Common Man Cocktails I’m your host Derrick Schommer. We’re going to stick with the pousse café style layered drinks again and probably even next week because we have another one lined up for that.
This one is going to have this Frangelico. Does anybody else think this looks like Anchamima? This looks like Anchamima. I don’t know, I just wait for it to get up and start dancing like the commercials. I don’t know if she dances but whatever.
We’re going to have some more Blue Curacao, big fan of that this week and crème de banana. These all tend to work. I’m not going to try and explain this. This is called the blue eyed blonde. I don’t know. It’s kind of blue. It’s got blonde. It’s got a weird taste but a good taste. It’s just so different and I blame it on this little one here. This is if you don’t know it’s of nutty, I don’t know if it’s almond, delicately cork and bean, enjoy straight up or on ice, I don’t suggest that on ice. There’s some sort of nutty flavors to it.
The Curacao of course is your cool blue, sweetie. I like it and crème de banana, banana flavors. And now this drink, because it’s layered it has to go on specific order. We’re going to use a spoon and we’re going to do the crème de banana first.
Now you might go and say, “No, this isn’t right, you’re supposed to use Baileys” and then some people are going to be like, “No, you’re supposed to use crème de cacao”. There are tons of recipes out there, different ways of layering them. This is the one that worked for me. It might not be perfect but the tastes, the way they enter your mouth is fine. It’s great for me.
So what we’re going to do first is crème de banana, the reason is, it sinks. So when you’re layering things, the things that sink on the bottom tend to be the first ones that go in. Not always, but it’s a good, good rule. And then we’re going to do the Curacao, the Blue Curacao. This one will be layered and it will float.
Now, it depends on how patient you are. I tend to be a failure at patience so it doesn’t always work perfect. This doesn’t layer exactly on top, it gives you a slight cloudiness which in some cases looks bad when you’re using Baileys but in the case of the Blue Curacao, it kind of gives it a transparent green. So, you get a yellow to green effect which is cool on itself. So if you look so far, you might be able to see there’s a small hint of green if you look into through the shirt. You can learn a lot about coloring this way, right? If you’ve taken any art classes, blue and yellow makes green and then this guy we’re going.
This guy’s going to float on the top. Now, this one is kind of clear. I would have thought it would have been brown but it’s not brown and it floats really well on top of the Curacao. It doesn’t necessarily add too much to the impression factor. Here we go. There you go, check that out. You’ve got yellow. You automatically get a green. You get a dark, dark blue and then you get this almost clear as brown on the top.
Now if this was like a Baileys it will be white, you’ll be able to see it better but really this is the cool effect. And some of the recipes only call for crème de banana in Curacao because you’re going to get that effect right away. I found the one that has the Frangelico for two reasons. We’ve never really use it on the show that I could remember and it adds a cool transition when you take the shot, speaking of which let’s taste the shot.
This one is another layered drink. You got to really drink straight down. Sipping it, you’re going to get a ton of Frangelico on them. I’m not a huge fan of that much. People might have actually done this. If you have a peanut butter sandwich, just peanut butter then you layer bananas on top, wheat bread, right, bite that, it taste like this, maybe a little sugar. I’m not sure if you’d want to do that in real life but the Curacao adds a slight sweet factor but because there’s some action in between, you get bombardment of peanut butter taste and then as a nice smoothness followed by banana which fades away and you’re just left with the peanut butter like my mouth taste like I just had a peanut butter sandwich. I don’t like peanut butter sandwiches. This might not be necessarily you think you want to be shooting but you know, it’s an option. So that is the Blue Eyed Blonde, that’s pretty cool I think.
This is Grappa; his is the Friulian Grappa from a Fantinel. I’ve had enough. People try this during family events for the last two weeks. I really want to if this is going to be strong sponsor if I could back it and everybody says this is the smoothes Grappa they’ve ever had. If you’ve never had Grappa, just start with the top shelf. This is a double gold, award winner in San Francisco I think last week or two weeks ago. Either case, you can’t go wrong with something that’s got more than one gold, right? I’m your host Derrick Schommer. We’re teaching you how to drink.
