Bluegrass Fiddle Lessons - Big Sciota

Hi! Welcome to OnlineLessonVideos.com. I’m Ian Walsh. Today I’m going to teach you a tune on a fiddle called Big Sciota. We’re going to do it in the key of G. And then to start off this lesson I’m going to play along to a practice track that’s set up at a 120 beats per minute. It’s also included in this video, you’ll get a slower track which is about 100 beats per minute. So here it is Big Sciota in the key of G.

So this tune starts off some pick up notes and we’re going to play them on our D string. So we just bow the D string. What we’re going to do is use our 1st, 2nd and 3rd finger to run up in a G position like a G scale position. So what you do is run up your D string. So you just kind of do it quickly. When we apply the bow to that, we’re going to do the oldest with one bow. Here so it’s going to be a big down bow. And we you play the bow, you get this.

So you just try that a few times. So we’ll jump ahead now and I’ll take you through some of these trickier notes that happen right in the beginning. These notes are going back and forth with the B and the G, C,B, G. And then they open an A there too. We go from this G and we play G-F-G. Straight to the B. So we take that and digest the 1st second.

From there we go to an open A to the C. Whenever I play a C and I’m about to be followed up by a B the note below it, I like to slide into it just not anything too major, just a slight slide. If we put that together with our G-F-G. Just try that again. From there we go from the G you’re going to go back to the B. Here we go, let’s play from the G. Over the open D to the F and then to the A. So.

We’ll start at the beginning here. Let’s go ahead and apply that pick up notes. We have the triplet, the one bow slur D, E and F up to the G. All counted in 1, 2, 3. 1, 2, 3. And let’s do it one more time. 1, 2, 3.

The next little section is pretty similar to the beginning of this one.
