Blues Guitar Lesson - Born Under A Bad Sign (jam)

(Music Playing) Hey, everybody. This is Bryan Helmec betweenthelicks.com. Here to give you guys another free guitar lesson. Today, I ma going to talk about the Classic and Famous Blues song born under the bad side and this will be one of the first and my mini part series I assume of how to play and how to really get into a particular song that is famous and whenever genre. So, today we are going to do “Born under bad sign” and originally done by Albert King, probably the most famous version, Jimmy Hendrix do to the version, cream the version. It lets goes and on and on. So, today we are going to learn the riff, the classic riff. We are going to learn how to kind of improve and what scale you want to use to improve riff and then, you are going to get free jam track, that you can download it in MP3 format from my website, which is what you heard right on the entrap. So, first let us learn the riff. The riff is bass of C#, blue scale and it is really quite a simple lick but it is kind of interesting and how it blaze out. So, I am going to play real quick and then I am going to show you what to do, so it goes like this. (Demo) Alright now, that was in a lower position in normal. It is actually what the bass would play in a particular song, and it is bass off, like I said the C# Pentatonic or Blues scale. And here is an example of, and maybe the first position for guitar it would be. (Demo) And that lick is actually interesting because it has a lift but that is not the beginning of the measure, the beginning of the measure is right here. (Demo) Measure. (Demo) Measure, so, every time comes back to that C# in the beginning, that is the doubt beat of the next measure. So, something you want to watch out for. So, you got that and then, the next part is actually the turn around. There is no beginning to the Four chord and actually, this goes straight up to the Five chord where it goes. (Demo) Come in out of this. (Demo) And it just moves up to the G#, down to an F#. (Demo) Back to the riff. (Demo) Till for a total of 12 bars. It is pretty self-sufficient song, it sounds really great. It is easy to solo over and I am going to have quick solo and quick example of an improvise solo, that I tabbed out afterwards and recorded yesterday but you are going to see it in just a second, here you go. (Demo) Alright, now that you have a basic idea of what the solo, can kind of sound like with that, kind of following Albert King, kind of a bending in vibrato style. Here is how I played it. I started off the basically the entire solo is not C# Blues by the way. But I started off the lick, bending on my 14th fret, it goes a. (Demo) Just repeating that bending up the fourth step. (Demo) And then come in back to the root and getting some vibrato. Now, that sounds really good because is a popular note to bend on and then come back to the root. (Demo) Always sounds nice and getting some vibrato in there, all you have to do shake your hand around a little, move it and get that nice tone. The next lick, I kind of run up the C# Blues scale and then, I hit the 7th (Demo) And bend out to the root. (Demo) Real quick. (Demo) And then, bend on the minor 3rd. (Demo) The 12th fret. (Demo) And come back to the 9th fret. (Demo) And kind of repeat that. (Demo) And before going back to the 7th this kind of bog notes. (Demo) Back to the 12th fret bending. (Demo) Coming back to the 9th fret, the root. (Demo) So, the whole lick kind of sound like this. (Demo) And then, I come up. (Demo) Hit the octave all the way up on the 21st and then, for the turn around for the G# goes down to the F# before it comes back to the C# chord wise. I hit an F# in two octaves there. (Demo) And then, I come down Chromatically. (Demo) Before I get back to the C# to get rhythm. So, and I can did it off time. (Demo) before we come back in the time for the C#, get in back to the C#, and then just kind of a little (demo) lick and just can pull it off there to back to the root. So, keep this in mind, bending on the 3rd, the Minor 3rd, using the root. (Demo) It is kind of anchor note and then, bending to the root, and bending above the root here, maybe on the 4th and then, always use vibrato. And try to put your solo into it because that is kind of the idea. So, after you get this down, you want to learn a little more.
