Female Speaker: When it comes to buying a dinghy, the choices seem endless. Everything is available from simple transportation that needs no fuel, right on up to huge RIBs with massive outboards, the grace the jacks of mega yards. The important thing is to always keep the intended use in mind when you make your purchase. If you want to pull a water skier, then you’ll need at least a 12-foot dinghy with a 25 horsepower engine.
If you simply want to get to shore and back, a smaller dinghy with a 10 horsepower engine should be just fine. If you’re going to tow your dinghy behind your yacht, then you should have an easy way to remove the engine before towing. Most dinghies that have engines permanently mounted are stowed on deck via some sort of small crane. This cata marine has a unique way of lifting its dinghy.
A dinghy is a boat and not a toy. You have to carry Coast Guard approved life jackets for all passengers as well as observe all safety requirements for your size dinghy. If you travel far from the mother ship, a portable VHF and GPS are great safety aides in the event of a breakdown.
Also be sure to carry a small first-aid kit, some small tools and water, needless to say an anchor with about 100 foot of rope is essential. When it comes to dinghy upwards, the main consideration is whether or not you are going to take the engine off when under-weighing your main vessel. If you are a sailor and towing a dinghy, then you should remove the engine and gas tank. That means the engine should be as light as possible so it can easily be stored onboard. Sailors use a handy hoist to get the engine on and off.
There are many varieties of cranes and hoisting mechanisms for getting the dinghy on and off the mother ship. Flesh your upward in freshwater, if you are stowing it for more than a week. Change the spark plugs and oil if you have a four-stroke at least yearly. Always use the correct oil-gas mixture if you have a two-stroke engine.
