Boating tutorial series: Boat on the right

You see a power boat approaching on your right hand side, who has the right of way, we'll explain when well come right back.

There is an easy way to remember this important rule; if he is on the right he has the right of way. First decide if the risk of collision exists. If the other boat is getting closer and has a steady bearing to you the risk of collision exists. He is called the stand on vessel; you are the give away vessel and must take early action to steer clear. To do this, make a big turn to starboard, so you will pass behind him. Your turn must be big enough so that he knows you are giving him the right of way.

He is supposed to maintain course and speed. Once he has crossed ahead of you, you can return to your course. Slow down if necessary and let him pass ahead. To avoid close quarter situations, give the other boater the right of way as early as possible.
