The killer is Carbon Monoxide, an invisible and odorless gas found in boat exhaust. It collects near the back of the boat while the engines are running, especially while going slowly or idling. Some victims feel nausea, dizziness, confusion, or headache. Others never feel any symptoms at all. They just pass out and drown. Cheap surfing is one cause of carbon monoxide poisoning but it also happens on or near motor boats and house boats, in enclosed cabins or in the space under the swim step. Make sure your fun day on the water stays fun. Protect yourself and your family from carbon monoxide, avoid the rear deck’s swim platform and exhaust areas on any type of boat when the engines are generators are running. Use a marine carbon monoxide detector and have the exhaust systems inspected regularly. And remember, carbon monoxide poisonings are preventable.
