Hi I’m Dale Beaumont and welcome to another episode of Get Published TV. This is the only dedicated show on the internet, tell you to write, publish and market your own best selling book.
Now you’ve been tuning in toward our previous episodes. And you may be wondering what with the hat Dale? Well all going to be revealed in a few moments time, you see one of the biggest questions that I get ask is how should I get my book published? What is the best part? Should I actually prefer to make major book publish out. Or I’ve heard that you maybe should self publish and I’ve some negative things about that.
So which is the really better and why? And I’m spoken about them in the previous episodes of get publish TV. I’ve could’ve lay out both options and lift it up to you to make a decision. But even then people still seems like they’re a little bit confused. And they don’t know which direction they should go.
What I’m going to do now is I’m going to give you a complete direction. I’m actually give you a path that you can follow and it’s actually sort of fore sketch in the process. Because there is actually 44, ways or methods in which you can get your book published.
There’s actually a few more than that but there are four major ways that we can talk about today. And what I want you to do if you are new author and you’re looking to get out there. Is to follow these one step at a time, and to follow through is whole analogy. That I’ve developed a little bit what will I call a baseball diamond that I think it is.
I will start down here and there’s actually you’ll start over here at base number one. And you go across to second base and then you go to third base and then eventually hit a home run and end up down the bottom there. So what I’m going to do now is go in through and explain each of these 4 different methods for getting your book published. And explain to you what to do first and why.
So once you’ve actually published once you’ve written your book. Then what you really want to do. You can if you want to go straight ahead and try to pitch that to publishers if you want to. You can try to hit a homerun like straight away. That can be really tough and very difficult to do especially if you’re 1st time author. And for many people after 6 months of banging their heads against the wall they en d up saying. You know what too tough and too difficult and they end up either giving up all together. Which is a really tragedy or they could fall back and explore some other paths.
What other people do is they jump straight into the self publishing their books. The self published can use great I love self publishing. I’ve self published 16 books now but even then there actually a cost of entry if you want to self published. Because you have to under write the production cost of your books. So when you are taking to account things like editing, proof reading, type setting, printing, marketing, distribution. You know you could be investing 10, 20, 30 or 50 thousand dollars.
Of course that depends on your pre-run in how many books you’re doing at in one time. And a bunch of other variables as well, however it is still a cost involve. Now when I 1st caught started some 10 years ago in publishing. There is really only 2 major parts it goes through a major publish or major book publisher or to self publish. But now just when you realized they came they actually emerge to other options, which is a great way to kind of actually start giving your book out there in the market place. To start to actually build your followers or to build your readership or your fans whatever you want to call that. and it’s a great way to them to move forward and actually self publish after going through this two stages, so enough of the kind of overview.
Let’s get in to some details now. So the first step that you should actually go down if you’re new is to get your books sold through digital format. Now by digital we’re actually mean that there is no actually a physical book that gets printed, it’s actually just like 20 file that gets download to people’s computers. Now of course that they can printed out or they can read it on their computer or what’s really exciting right now is they can read it on a whole lot of hand held devices. Such as the Amazon kindle, recently I was over in Europe and also cruise ship with a lot of people from American and Canada and of course people from the UK.
And I was walking around the ship and I saw hundreds of people with this Amazon Kindles. The Sony E readers why? Because these people were traveling quite a lot than carrying files of 20 books with them in their luggage, they carry these little hand held devices and they were able to access up to 5,000 books which is mind blowing when you think about it. This is a huge growing market what’s so fantastic is you can get your book out there. And in the hands of people with zero cost can you can actually even if you start charging. You can actually earn some income from doing that which is great.
It’s a really fantastic thing to do, and what is actually great in most site in which I will talk more about in the future episode of get publish TV. And that’s great way road I call smash words. So remember that website and keep tuning to get publish TV because I have a whole system comes together through on great website. Then the next step once you go from 1st base which is do it through digital format then you probably want to go down in this path which the print on demand path.
Now print on demand isn’t actually a thing could’ve on its own, it’s actually you know why a sub category. In fact, both of these are in a way subsets of self publishing but it’s just a way to describe a method of printing. So before ten years ago, if you want to sell self publish your book. You have to normally print a minimum of a thousand copies in order to really to make it really economically buyable. Sometimes even 2,000 or 3,000 before the cost actually before it started to come worth while.
However now with the what’s called digital printing or also it’s known as print on demand. There is technology available out there that now enables you to print any number of books that you would love. So if you want to print just one copy, you can print one copy, if you want print 5, it’s going to be 5, 10. You know a hundred it’s up to you whatever you would like. Once you start to print more some other 2,500 or a thousand. Then it actually becomes more economical to go through offset printing machine and to larger volumes. But what that means is you can actually do a small tiny print mode just of a handful of books if you wish. And start to get those in the market place and what you can also so as well is you can either get a hundred books through print on demand. And of course it’s going to be a little bit more expensive but you cannot have the huge, of outright. You can sell those, get the profit and then re invest again to ,go from a hundred books and then 200 and to 400 and you just keep repeating the numbers in going bigger and bigger.
So that’s what print on demand is all about all alternatively what you can do now. Instead of having any about stock of inventories it’s called, you can actually store that file with a print on Demand Company. Then when order comes in, you send order to the print on Demand Company. They will print one book and ship it directly to the costumer, so you actually never even touch that book. And in that way you don’t have to print anymore books that you actually need.
So it’s really powerful that it can revolutionize the whole publishing industry. However once that you have done that for awhile, they cost do start to add up. You maybe buying books for seven or 9 $10 a copy, well if you move to a offset printing machine you can get those books stand for maybe $1.50 or $2 per copy. So if you are now selling a large number of books, it would be much better to go back to the traditional self publishing model. Get those books printed to a professional book printer and you’ve got how many copies that you use if you could move in a thousand, 2,000, 3,000, 5,000 and then you can just sell those books through.
And then you’re getting the basic exact cost price I suppose to paying premium price because you’re doing a limited volume over there. And then after you self publish, some of you may choose by the state over these stages. Some of you may need to want to stay on 1st base. And, if you do-great, fantastic, some of you may want to stay on second base, that’s great as well. Others if you may want to get in to third base which is why you are self publish author like I’ve done.
And then some people may want to go and hit a homerun. Which is to go through a major book publisher? Now we’ve had conversations about the differences between going through a self-publishing or going through a major publisher. One is not better than the other, it really just depends in ultimately what you want to achieve, and how much control that you want to have over your work. However if you are self published author and publisher comes along and says, you know what. We can pay you a $100,000 to write your next book which is in known in the industry as an advance. Then that maybe a more attractive option than to actually self publish.
Because once you’ve going to become a big name, or just someone that people know and trust. I would rather be getting want to get paid up front right away, I suppose top having to wait kin months. Or you can use before I see it big return on the investment. And that’s the reason why you’re ultimately and then eventually get to the stage. Where you are published and signed by a major publisher. However, he is the deal they don’t publish un casted, un proof people anymore. You may quotes some names but these are once in thousands or one in ten of thousands of people.
What are they looking for now is people that have a proven track record. And how do you do that? By going through all these other stages, getting to third base, get creating a huge crowd or a huge audience and then going to a publisher, do you want the next book? Or do you want to re-publish this book, which is already proven to be successful.
I know I’m go over my eight-minute limit for most of these videos but I really want to get this message across. There’s so much more that we can talk about in this particular area. And I’m really excited about this area of digital publishing and so we can talk about that in the future episode. Keep tuning in to get publish TV and leave us your comments on.
