Hi, I’m Dale Beaumont and welcome back to Get Published TV. This is the only dedicated show on the internet to help authors and aspiring authors write, publish and market their own best selling book.
In the last few episodes we’ve been on the bit of the role that we’ve been talking about the importance of having what we called like killer title, like killer book title. And that word killer title was I first heard from Mark Victor Hansen who’s the co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series and he spoke about you got to have a killer title so I really took this, I did a hop and I’ve spent a lot of time you know researching different books titles and coming out whit the bit of the formula of different styles that you can adopt when it comes to writing your book title.
So if you’re just tuning in now, go back after you finish this video or even stop and go back now and watch the last like three or four episodes that way up to speak and you know exactly what we’re all talking about.
So let’s just very quickly recap about the different styles of books titles. We’ve spoken about short titles with a very descriptive subtitle of course. Then we’re speaking about long titles which were number two. Number three which were talking about is shock titles and number four which we’re looking at now and just wrapping up is story or metaphor titles. So I used the example here “eat that Frog.” Another one is the book called “Fish” which is not a very popular business book. Another one that comes to mind again, very popular book is called “Who Move my Cheese?”
So the title of the book actually comes out of the content of what the book is about, what’s the main message to come out of the book. One that I also sorted books on the shelf were called “Wombat Selling.” Now, if you’re not from a strategy, you might not be aware of Wombats, a native Australian animal similar to the Kangaroo and Koala. And a Wombat has a characteristics and this person has used those characteristics into a book about sales. So it’s called Wombat Selling. So you don’t really understand what the title is about. But the subtitle is how to sell by word of mouth. So you know it’s a book about selling and I’m guessing that if you read the book you’re going to learn a little bit more about Wombats and that’s going to be a story that’s going to be carried out throughout the book. So it’s either a metaphor or story, that’s number four. So hopefully now, you know its opening your mind to thinking about that as a particular style for writing your book title. You may think we are having a new stories, I haven’t got a lot of metaphors, that’s fine. But if you have, then maybe you want to pull back to the surface like Who Move my Cheese or Fish or Eat that Frog to become the title of your book. So just try it on and see how you got.
Let’s move on to the next one which I believe would be number five. This is another one of my personal favorites which is a common sign with a twist. So a few examples that I have seen you know throughout my journey, I remember one which was “Girls Just Want to Have Funds” meaning of course money. So that was a common saying “Girls just want to have fun” but we did twist with the word funds. So I really think that was quite cool and it jumped out of me and they go “Oh, that’s quite interesting!” So I’ve picked up the book, it was a book for financial planning for women, so really a good title.
Another one which I remember saying, it was a book about Ski Destinations. Now, we all know they say the greatest show on earth and we often hear that related to the circus right? But this one was the greatest snow on earth and it obviously features different ski destinations from around the world, so again, not a clever title. This is another book that has a common sign with a twist and this book is called ‘Show Mommy the Money.”
Now, we all know or we may have seen or even if you haven’t, go out and check out the movie Jerry Maguire because Jerry Maguire, good character and he talks about the show me the money, show me the money, and you may have seen that same with Tom Cruise and saying “Show my the money!” Very funny, so probably sound, so looks really terrible on this video right now. But actually watch the movie and you’ll see what I mean. But the saying is showed me the money, right? This is “Show Mommy the Money!” And so this is actually and the subtitle is how you can be an at home mom and make money, so very clever. So how you can be an at home mom and make money, show mommy the money, so great for women that maybe have a small child or a couple of kids at home and they’re looking for ways to make extra income. So another great book, common sign with a twist.
So what you want to do is think about your book, what’s it about and think about common sayings in your industry or maybe you can go through you know there are different books about common sayings that you can probably get that go through like Too Many Cooks Spoil the Broth for example. So you can come up with something that rhymes with cook, so something that rhymes with broth. I just use this as an example or Many Hands Make a Lot Work is another one. So you know you could think about, these are common things. So you can Google it and get a whole list of these different sayings. I’m sure this is probably the word for them. I just don’t know what it is. That’s why I’m saying sayings.
But otherwise, it’s probably books that you can get where you can you know just talk about or you can get it and then you get a few other words and you just come out what rhymes with that word and what rhymes with that word that’s related to my book or my industry or what my subject matter is about and voila, you my find you come up with a brilliant idea for a title. One that is very funny, very clever and one that really grab people’s attention because they kind of know it already, they have that instant recognition but then you just flipped it around and made it a little bit different. So that is number five.
What we probably going to do is actually wrap up this video because I mean getting danger of going overtime, I really want to try and keep these short and at least I want to give you a couple of really good ideas and then you know you can come back tomorrow and get some more.
Please connect with us through Facebook, Twitter or via email because my time is going off saying I need to wrap up. Have you guys had some examples for short titles or long titles or metaphor title, shock titles, common sayings with a twist?
