Botoxing Bunions

Dr. Travis Stork: Dr. Philip Radovic back in the procedure room, he recently patented a brand new surgery-free treatment for bunions. He is going to perform this on his patient Rita today. So Dr. Radovic, before you reveal just how it's done, why don't you show us some before and afters of this procedure. Dr. Philip Radovic: Sure Travis! We can look up on the screen here, we have a before picture of a bunion and this is a mild bunion. I want to make sure everybody understand that this procedure is really for the early beginning mild bunions to try to prevent surgery by having this procedure. We can see here the big toe, the large toe budding to the second toe, we can see this red sort of bump over here, which is the bunion itself and that's due to a malalignment of this joint, the first metatarsal phalangeal joint that is imbalanced by the muscles on it. So we are going to treat those muscles and actually get that balance back in order. Here we have after six weeks, after this little minor procedure and now you can see that the hallux or the big toe is not budding to the second toe as it is over here in the before picture and we can see the reduction of the bump on this side here. Dr. Travis Stork: So what is the magic potion that you are using? Dr. Philip Radovic: The magic potion is botulism toxin, Botox. Andrew Ordon: We love Botox! Dr. Jim Sears: They play -- everywhere. Dr. Philip Radovic: Play head to toe, right? Dr. Andrew Ordon: It's unbelievable, it seems like everyday there is a new usage for Botox; we have done it for obviously for wrinkles, we have done migraine headaches. We have done -- Dr. Travis Stork: Sweating. Dr. Andrew Ordon: Sweating, we have done on the hands - Dr. Jim Sears: Yeah, smoking. Is there anything it doesn't do? Dr. Philip Radovic: What's really interesting about I found in doing the studies in large bunions, it doesn't work but what it does do is it does remove the pain. Dr. Travis Stork: Rita, are you ready. Rita: I am ready. Dr. Travis Stork: Show us the procedure, Dr. Radovic. Dr. Philip Radovic: What I have is a little muscles stimulator here with the probe that I can inject the botulism toxin through. I am going to turn that on, and it's a little uncomfortable, but it's just like getting a shot and I want to probe down here, into the muscle, and we are going to see her toe start twitching when I hit the correct muscle. I have my botulism toxin here and then slowly inject that. How are you doing, Rita? Dr. Travis Stork: And how long do you see a result? Dr. Philip Radovic: Six weeks typically.
