Monty: Hi! My name is Monty from Waynesville, Ohio. What factors determine a relapse in a stage III breast cancer survivor? Steve Edge: Monty unfortunately many women with breast cancer do relapse, and these factors that are associated with relapse are not just associated with stage III but with all cancers. The larger a woman's tumor, the more lymph nodes that are involved, and certain biologic factors about the cancer make a woman at higher risk of developing relapse. Ultimately, however, the exact percentage of relapse isn't as important as doing the right things around the time of diagnosis, such as taking the appropriate chemotherapy and hormonal therapy to reduce the chance to give you the best chance that you won't relapse.
