Michelle: Hi! I am Michelle from Fort Wayne, Indiana. My girl friend has been told that a breast reduction would help her with the chronic back pain. Is this necessary or is it going too far?

Dr. Venu Akuthota: Hi Michelle, as far as the breast reduction surgery for back pain, I would not do the surgery just for that reason. If you have other reasons to do the breast reduction surgery, then it may help your back. But usually, it's not a panacea for back pain and it's not the sole reason for having back pain. So, it can be a part of your treatment, but I would try to make sure you have other reasons for the breast reduction surgery.
