Host: What are some of the problems with breastfeeding that you have to be concerned about?
Speaker: Occasionally, we do get real problems with breastfeeding. Some babies are allergic to the food that the mothers are eating. Severe cases of eczema in breastfed babies, we watch very carefully what the mothers are eating. We actually can test the baby and find out that it is allergic to her, intake of milk or fish or nuts or something.
Some babies just don't get enough. There are not everyone on this with enough breast milk to supply her baby. So we follow the weight. That's the best way to know if the baby is getting enough. The baby is gaining, the baby is getting enough. They usually gain about half an ounce a day when they are very little and we like to maintain about that kind of weight gain or better. If the baby seems hungry all the time, he is not gaining well and you have to supplement him, not everybody can supply a baby. So we are very careful about the weight to make sure that the baby is thriving.
Sometimes the milk, that the babies are throwing up the milk or they are not -- or they have other stomach problems, we can't always blame the breast milk itself. Sometimes it is the milk, sometimes it's some food in the mother's diet that's having an effect. So again each case is individual. That's rare. Most babies adjust the mother's milk very well and most of them are not allergic to it. So we have to know your kid, we have to know what your family story is. It's always worth a try to breastfeed. Most of the time people love it. The best thing about breastfeeding is you just love watching the baby grow on your milk. It's like staying pregnant and being able to watch your baby develop because you are still being a babies full supplier. Most mothers love it.
