Brother MFC-6490cw All-In-One Printer - Review Part 2/2 While this is printing let’s talk a little bit about the economy behind printing photos yourself. Of course if you're printing 4 x6 it is pretty cheap to get in the store. So you know how come we work that out. Well, 4 x 6 papers come down a lot but also the Brother MFC 6490 CW is able to utilize what's called the high-yield cartridge. Now these cartridges are actually able to produce about twice as much printing as the standard cartridges that you get with your printer. So by buying the high-yield cartridges you’re able to extend the printer even further and of course that as much more economical way to do it, but in addition to that depending on the size of the print that you're going to be doing. Now I've got of couple of demos here and these are actually printed on the MFC 6490. So you can see a 4 x 6 its here. So that’s standard but then as you start getting into 8 x 10, this is on an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of photo paper, so a little larger than 8 x 10. The thing about this is that you're going to pay upward of about $7.00 or $8.00 to get this printed on a photo studio because enlargements tend to cost a lot more than the standard print size. So now all of a sudden this becomes economical because this is only going to cost at the most a couple of bucks coming out of your MFC 6490. And then of course being able to print at 11 x 17, that is phenomenal and that’s something that going to cost you a lot more if you were to take it to a photo finishing lab. So let’s see how long this is taking here. There we go everything is done printing so I'm just pull out right out the printer here. Let’s see how that turned out and there we are. So there's the photo that we sent to the printer. It looks absolutely superb. It looks like it came from a photo finishing studio and it definitely doesn’t look like something that I've printed myself at home. Once we’re done printing that photo we can just pull the camera card right over there. Put it back in our camera and we’re good to go. So the ease of use and just being able to eliminate the computer step of importing your photos and then having to print them and hope that they work out and just the fact, that the MFC 6490 CW has a built-in photo enhancements. You can change the crop date or you change where it’s going to crop the photo and things like that. The red eye reduction, change the brightness and contrasting, color ratio and things. So this is so much here that it’s just nice to be able to get it away from that extra step of using the computer as an in term step. Now in your office time is money, right? Well, the MFC 6490 CW from Brother printed up to 35 pages per minute black and up to 28 pages per minute in color. As you can see all the photo printing including up to 11 x 17 is absolutely borderless and that’s a lovely feature. Also DPI resolution of those prints is up to 6000 by 1200 DPI. So you're going to get absolutely phenomenal picture quality from this printer. Of course with the massive amount of e-mail that goes through our office in a regular basis. Fax machines are kind of almost become obsolete to the point where we don’t necessarily even have to justify the extra room that they take up in our office. So it’s just nice to have that feature as a part of the brother MFC 6490 CW because of the fact that it’s built-in. So there's no extra desk space being used up and now we've still got the ability to send and receive those occasional facts that we do need to have to go through in our office. So that’s just an extra bonus. One of the key things that we have to look out when were buying an all-in-one printer for our office or home is we want to make sure that it is going to be compatible with all of our devices. We want to be able to make sure that it’s going to print from our computer. We’re going to be able to scan from our computer and things like that. Well, the Brother MFC 6490 CW not only boasts compatibility and provides drivers for Windows and Mac but in addition to that they actually provide the Linux drivers for you. So if you're a Linux user you're going to be happy to find out and I've tested it on my Ubuntu system. It works absolutely perfectly so we’re able to print directly from our Ubuntu system through the wireless with an effortless DEB setup just through a quick install and there's RPM’s available as well for you red hot users out there. On top of that with the scanner it actually works on Linux as well. It came right up in a gimp after I installed the WM package and it just works absolutely flawlessly. Now when we’re shopping around for a printer, there are a few different things that we need to look at. One, is our high-yield cartridges available for this printer in the MFC 6490 CW? The answer is yes. So we’re going to be able to save some money in our ink by buying cartridges that have more ink per cartridge and in addition to that we’re going to look at how many cartridges does this system take. You’ve seen some printers out there that have one maybe two cartridges. Sometimes the black cartridge is separate from a colored cartridge. Well, what happens if yellow is used up? Do you have to replace the entire cartridge? Absolutely so in this case they have broken down a CMY case. So the brother DMFC 6490 CW actually takes four individual cartridges. One for each color, so if you run out of yellow or if you run out of cyan or black or magenta you can take that one cartridge. Get it replace and then you're back in business. You don’t have to replace it for one individual color. In a case of an all-in-one printer one of the things that we need to watch for is the scanners. The scanner is high quality. Well this is over 19,000 dots per inch okay. How’s that for you? Also does it a sheet feeder or a flat bed? Well, the MFC 6490 CW has both up to 50 sheets and the sheet feeder. That’s very convenient nice and easy and then of course it’s got the flat bed full size 11 x 17 scanner as well at the resolution 19200. And of course the most obvious thing that we need tell our self or find out when we’re shopping around for a new printer is the print quality exceptional? Is it going to live it up to our expectations? Well at 16,000 bytes 1200 dots per inch the printing is absolutely superb on the MFC 6490 CW much better than I would expect for a business printer. To be honest with you, I think that the printer absolutely excellent. I think that the danger with this printer is all of your stuff is going to want to come in and print all of their photos at the office. So watch out for that one. You're going to be using enough some more ink there. Feature set on the MFC 6490 CW is superb with the photo editing features, the built-in LCD at 3.3 inches wide screen and of course you can also preview your incoming faxes on that screen as well, just an awesome suite and it was so easy to set up. Everything is done right through the on screen display, for example when you’re setting up your wireless networking it is so easy just to answer the questions. Brothers thought up an intuitive interface. We’re able just to use this system. We don’t need to tap it into the computer at all to get on the wireless network or anything like that. Everything is done right through the screen here and then of course using the phone dial pad. We’re able to enter information like a keyboard and of course use the fax machine as well for incoming and outgoing faxes. So such exceptional features set. We’re going to ask our self what's the bottom line. How much this is going to cost us, right? Well, the Brother MFC 6490 CW is not $500.00 or $600.00 like you would expect in our world of increasing gas prices. This printer goes for a strict price of about $300.00. So get some eye browser in that raze and okay well what about the print cartridges. So they are going to cost me $100.00 per cartridge, the one that I got a put four of them in there. Well that’s another place that they're giving you deal because the Brother cartridges, the high-yield cartridges go for $16.00 for each color cartridge and only $30.00 dollars for the high-yield black cartridges as well. So very economical buy and like we saw the feature set is exceptional as well and absolutely superb device, the MFC 6490 CW from Brothers.
