Jennifer Matthews: Two-year-old Evelyn Meyer is stuck in a body that won't listen to her brain. She has Rett syndrome. A neurological disroder found mostly in girls. Evelyn works with therapists five days a week. Today mom and dad watch as this horse helps her build muscles. Evelyn also sees a speech pathologist to help build other muscles -- ones to help her swallow.
Pamela Clarke-Levens: Evelyn's difficulty was actually getting a strong swallow, so that when she swallowed, she still had food sitting in her throat. Good girl -- you did it!
Jennifer Matthews: Speech pathologist Pamela Clarke-Levens attaches a device called vitalstim to Evelyn. It sends small electrical currents into her neck.
Pamela Clarke-Levens: It helps those muscles to move stronger and faster.
Jennifer Matthews: It's helped thousands of patients with all types of swallowing problems -- even stroke and cancer patients.
Laurie McCarthy-Meyer: It's a simple pleasure that we all kind of take for granted.
Jennifer Matthews: It may not seem like much, but this spoonful of pudding gives Evelyn a chance to enjoy the simple pleasures in life.
