Male Speaker: Hello and welcome to Tobbaconist University. In this segment, we are going to be talking about the Basics of Butane Lighter Maintenance. While, there are a variety of butane lighters available whether traditional flame, burner, torch or any combination of three, the basics of butane lighter maintenance remain the same. The flame dial is turned all the way down. The lighter is purged, cleaned and refilled with butane. First, adjust the flame dial all the way down towards the negative to avoid any dangerous flare ups.
Next, and most importantly, you must purge the lighter. While you can use a small screwdriver, we recommend using the back end of a wooden match to avoid the risk of deforming the flame dial and butane valve. Take back end of the match and press it up against the butane valve. You will hear hissing, all the butane and air escape. You will need to do this several times until you can no longer hear any butane or air escaping from the lighter.
Then, clean the flame valve or burner with compressed air. Start by exposing the flame valve an ignition system. Holding the canister there three inches away and at a 45 degree angle, express the compressed air a few times to clear away char and debris. Ideally, you will be able to vacuum char and debris out, but this isn't always possible. While compressed air does increase the risk of pushing char and debris deeper into the lighter, if done correctly, this is a safe and effective way to clean your lighter. Finally, filling the butane lighter. If you are not using the name brand butane associated with your lighter, it's important to use the cleanest, most refined product available to you. For filling the compressed butane, we will considerably lower the temperature of the lighter. So, it's important to let it rest for 1-2 minutes until it reaches room temperature before relighting.
We will take a butane canister and made it to the butane valve on the lighter. Most lighters fill in 5-20 seconds and once full, you will feel the butane splashing back on to your hand. This is perfectly normal and completely harmless. Remember purging is key, 80% of the problems with lighters are the result of improper purging or not purging at all. Purge every time, every fill and you will be on the road to happy and healthy lighter function.
