Male: According to a recent Quest Diagnostics Health Trends Report, most patients with diabetes and high blood pressure are not being appropriately monitored for chronic kidney disease, a life threatening condition.
Dr. Hurwitz: The Quest Diagnostics Health Trends Report found that a majority of patients with diabetes and/or high blood pressure plus kidney disease did not receive a widely available and inexpensive urine test as recommended by medical guidelines. Yet these patients are the most vulnerable to the consequences of chronic kidney disease.
Male: Based on nearly five million test results, the health trends report the largest study of its kind had serious implications for the 40 million people who are at risk for chronic kidney disease.
Dr. Hurwitz: These findings demonstrate the need to promote early detection of kidney disease especially in patients with high blood pressure or diabetes. A simple urine test can detect kidney disease in its early stages when treatment is most effective.
