One of the nicest things you can do for somebody on a birthday or special occasion is make them a cake so here is some cake frosting techniques to make sure your cake looks good. Frosting helps sealing in a cake’s moisture and adds another element of flavor and texture. The key to frosting a cake well is to make sure the layers are cool and free of crumbs before you apply the frosting. Here are some things you will need:
The frosting, some cooling racks, maybe some birthday candles, some cake pans and some spatulas. Now step one is you are going to cool the cake layers and pans on a wire rack for about five minutes. Step two; you are going to cover another rack with a towel. Place the towel; towel side down on top of the layer and invert it as a unit, remove the pan. Step three, place original rack on the bottom of layer and then turn over both racks as a unit so the layer is right side up. Step four, repeat with the other layer, and allow these layers to cool completely. Step five, before frosting the cake; brush the loose crumbs from the sides and edges of the cooled layers. Support the cake firmly with one hand and brush crumbs with the other. Step six, place one layer rounded side down on a cake plate and spread about a half of cup of frosting to within a quarter inch of the edge of the cake. Step seven, place the second layer rounded side up on the frosted layer. Coat the side with a very thin layer of frosting to seal in the crumb. Step eight, swirl more frosting on the side forming a quarter inch ridge above the top of the cake. Step nine; spread the remaining frosting over the top of the cake just meeting the built up ridge around the side. Make attractive swirls or leave the top smooth for decorations.
Those are the basics of frosting a cake, and of course you can always decorate and here are some quick ideas about decorating your cake. You will have to decide how you want to decorate the cake. Is it going to be a message, a face, or just some cool stuff to put all over it. Signs and faces are best for parties and occasions, remember that. Now carefully get out a piece of paper. Draw and plan out what you want to do. Figure out what you need and get that stuff. Make sure your drawing is very detailed. There is only one cake and it is better to get it right on the first to second couple of the tries rather than continually smudging stuff off. For signs and faces, you might want to practice on a towel or solid surface first so you will have a little more experience in the area. Now make sure you are careful and do not crush anything in the process and make sure to leave a room for candles. After all, candles symbolize celebration.
