Hi! My name is Katie Jackson and I'm here at Studio Bleu Dance Center in Ashburn, Virginia. Today, I'm going to teach you how to jazz dance. We're going to start off learning how to do a Calypso Leap Turn. Now I'll go ahead and break it down for you.
We start off with a Shenae, point your right foot extend through your knee, point your foot sit up on your releve or your tip toes. Now you're going to plié, shenae turn. My weight should be on my left feet when I end the turn because that's what's going to give me the push to come up.
Now when this leg is going to come straight out and this leg is going to arch back and what we call an Attitude. Our knees bent not really tight, but not hardly straight. You want to bend it in a nice 45 degree angle.
Now I'll demonstrate. Up, down and up. Now when I do it, my arms will extend like this, that way my face is open to the audience. I kind of lean back with it a little bit and I extend through this leg. Make sure you extend and you Pointe. Now that's second shanae turn. That's what gives you the lift to get up off the floor and into the air. We'll break it done one more time.
We start with a Shenae and up, on twirl we want to make sure our arms are nice and locked out. I come down into a plié shenae, put my weight on my left foot, my arms go out with my leg, extend this front leg, back leg should come into an altitude and now at full speed; shenae up, down and leap and one more time. And this is how you do a Calypso Leap Turn and now we'll show you how to do a Switch Leap.
