Since their inception, camcorders have been recording our home movies, vacations, birthday parties, weddings, and pretty much anything else with one. With the advent of digital media and online sharing, the different flavors of camcorders have multiplied.
This video is intended to help you make sense of what each camcorder type does and what it is all about.
Today, the most popular format available is the Mini DV camcorder. They are very affordable and use tapes that apply high quality digital video in a compact and easy-to-use format. They are good for editing since almost all video editing programs will work with footages caught in this format. One of the main selling points is that, many DV tapes can record at a high depth making it the perfect match for your new high-definition TV.
Next is the hard drive camcorder. While being initially more expensive than the rest, these cameras eliminate the need to but tapes or DVDs since all the footages are stored directly on the camera’s hard drive. This can be inconvenient, if you run out of space and you are not around your computer or another storage device to transfer the video to in the middle of the shoot.
The fastest growing technology in the camcorder industry is micro drive camcorders. Like hard drive camcorders, micro drives use no tape. Rather, they rely on a flash drive or memory card to store footage. This is a plus in a tape less medium because skipping is virtually non existent.
Lastly, there are camcorders which record directly to a DVD. Since the discs are compatible in almost all DVD players, these machine make process for filming to sharing extremely fast. If you are not interested in editing your raw footage, this format would be ideal.
There are a few draw backs in this format. Rewritable DVDs are more expensive than write-ones DVDs.
All the formats mentioned have models that are called HD camcorders. This means they have the ability to record high definition. Each format has their own version of this technology.
