Dick: Alright, first not—Figure of 8 is what it is called and you can see why as I tie the knot because as I do it, it forms the figure 8.

Dick: Very quick easy to tie, holds very well and a strong knot.

Dick: Alright now, when I was using my cut off in the canoe, I do not want to loose in the water, so what I am going to do is tie what is called the clove-hitch where I go over the cord and then I come around and I go under the cord, looks at that, it locks
Laura: Perfect
Dick: Okay now, I got the bailer here and so what want to do is have a knot that I can use if I want to stretch out to bail in the different part of the canoe. So I put a slit knot on that, in that way I could change the position and it is very nicely
Laura: Oh that is very great
Dick: There we are.
Laura: Okay
Dick: Okay, I get my pack in and for tying my pack in, I am going to use a surgeons knot because it very, very secure knot and here it start out like a square knot but I take one more turn. Notice now that locks, this is the same by the way that is called the surgeons knot because this is what a surgeon uses to tie the cord of cease, sawing you up.
Laura: Great!
Dick: Now, we would like to have a knot which slides and locks. I use the colt hitch down there to anchor this, now I am going to take this around to this tree …
Laura: Okay
Dick: And I am going go around once, like overhand knot, but then I come around one more time right on top of that then I take it through on the outside, now I have a knot which when I cinctured up, it stays in place
Laura: Oh, it is beautiful!
Dick: Or if I release it, it is stay in place
Laura: Okay.
Dick: Pretty neat.
Laura: Hey, you know what? You seem to know what you are talking about. I want to know what I am talking about, I want to go and practice my knots. Okay, alright.
