Host: Does depression occur with other disorders? Dr. Kim Penberthy: Depression does co-occur with other disorders and one of them is Bipolar Disorder. Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder where you cycle between depression and what's called mania or hypomania and these are periods of time when you have excessive energy, you may not need to sleep. You feel on top of the world, you have racing thoughts; you do risky behaviors like spending money, having risky sex that sort of thing. So yes, if you think you have Bipolar Disorder, getting an evaluation for depression will help because that is a part of Bipolar Disorder. It used to be called Manic Depressive Disorder and it's really not called that anymore, but it's the same thing as Bipolar Disorder. Depression can also occur with other things like alcohol dependence, PTSD, these are two really common areas especially in veterans that we see occurring together and so if you are having symptoms of depression it is important. This is why it's important to be seen by a specialist who can really evaluate all of the symptoms that you are having because depression might just be part of what's going on.
