Male: This week’s inbox, we have a work from Ottawa asking “Can you actually get a real workout from a video game system like the Nintendo WII?”
We’ll work to help answer your question. We’ve come out to Studeo 55. It’s a boutique studio where they’ve taken the humdrum out of regular workout and actually made it fun. But we’re going to go inside and talk to Matt Reid. He’s the membership director here at Studeo 55 and the personal trainer. And he’s going to show us whether or not boxing using the Nintendo WII can actually give you a good sweat.
Thank you so much for letting us come down to your studio Matt.
Matt Reid: Thanks for coming.
Male: So the question, “Can people actually get a work out using these new control systems like the Nintendo WII?
Matt Reid: There’s no question that you’re going to burn some calories during this. I don’t know if you’re going to get a full caloric expenditure like you would in a regular workout.
Male: Yup.
Matt Reid: But it’s a good fun way to burn some calories.
Male: What’s interesting with these new game console systems and a lot of the manufacturers are doing it now, they use a motion control via what’s called X-access to be able to get you interactive into the game, so we’re going to actually try something like boxing.
Matt Reid: We’re going to box.
Male: We’re going to see how much of a workout we get.
Matt Reid: Exactly.
Male: Okay alright, so here we’re going to go.
Matt Reid: Alright.
[Demonstration]
Male: I knew it was only a matter of time. Nice.
Matt Reid: So, you can see here as we’re moving around it’s mostly arm, it’s mostly our arms.
Male: Yeah.
Matt Reid: And traditionally, you think of cardio, it’s moving your legs like running and what not, but you can still get a cardio workout from using your upper body. As you see, we’re moving our arms and thumb right now. And we’re still getting our heart rates up and working hard.
Male: Got you.
Matt Reid: So, you can still get that cardio workout.
Male: Yeah, yeah, definitely, I feel it. I feel like my heart rate is running now.
Matt Reid: Yeah, for sure. You get sort of short of breath. And it’s kind of fun, you can get this little bit of competition and you can work a little bit harder than you would on a treadmill maybe.
Male: Yeah. There you go, knocking me down again. Well, I can definitely feel it. I’m feeling good. It’s amazing how interactive this can be.
Matt Reid: Yeah, exactly.
Male: I guess we don’t want to sort of fight each other though.
Matt Reid: No, I don’t.
Male: Okay. Oh man, you took the ringer to me.
Matt Reid: You got me down at one time.
Male: I can’t believe how much my heart rate’s up and I’m actually feeling pretty tired.
Matt Reid: Yeah, it’s hard to speak right now.
Male: So, what do you think as far as a workout?
Matt Reid: I think it’s great, you know. It’s a fun way to get a little bit of activity. I don’t know if I count on it for my daily fitness regime, but it’s still a good way to have some fun and burn some calories.
Male: There you go. There’s the answer to your question. So, it will help get you off the couch. Don’t rely on it in terms of replacing healthy lifestyle.
Matt Reid: Lifestyle.
Male: It’s certainly a fun way to get a little bit of exercise.
Matt Reid: For sure.
Male: Want to get back at it?
Matt Reid: Yeahm let’s do it again.
Male: Let’s do it, alright. I’ll kill you this time.
Female: If you’ve got a question you’d like answered, send it to us at inbox@getconnectedtvshow.com.
