Canadian Wine Tasting
Hello everybody welcome to Wine Library TV. I’m your host, Gary Vaynerchuk and this my friends is The Thunder Show a.k.a The Internet’s Most Passionate Wine Program.
I feel like I want to turn off the T.V because I just walked in, I figured if I’m going to do what I’m going to do right now. I’m in the beautiful city of Toronto. Just look at this gorgeous, gorgeous city. If you’ve never been, I can’t wait to come back and there’s the flag line— beautiful.
Just to see a couple of book events and wine events and I noticed when I walked in I might—so I figured— you know what? We haven’t done this in a long time. Let’s do it. Let’s taste the wine in our hotel room, a Canadian wine. What we have is the Cave Springs 2007 Cabernet/Merlot from Niagara Peninsula, Ontario.
And what I know about the 2007 vintage because I’m in rocking indoor rolling here in here talking about the wine.—Sorry I’m looking for a little tripod thing, so I can actually—there we go.
Anyway, what I know about the 2007 Vintage is that it’s extremely different than the other vintages in the past. It is a much hotter vintage and it is not a typical for Ontario ‘06 and even much more classic. 2007 was a very hot vintage which created a very different type of wine.
So, right off the back, we’re going to get a little bit more fruit. It’s kind of like Canada’s Kangaroo Vintage because I always like to talk about you know, Barossa Valley and things of that nature. So, hot vintage in Ontario —and so we’re going to see what’s going on here.
Obviously, a lot of you know I’m very fond of Canadian wines in general. I think there’s a lot of upside going forward toward them. I also want to say I miss you guys. This book tour has been epic. I’ve seen so many of you doing the tour in different places, and I want to thank you guys. I miss you immensely and I’m looking forward to getting back into regimen.
It’s really interesting things with my calendar 2010 to get a restructured five days a week killer, Wine Library T.V world going. I don’t know. I still feel like I can get to a thousand, and so I’m looking towards that.
I’m very excited for a couple of reasons. It’s Mischa’s first Halloween this Saturday so I’ll be in Montreal tomorrow or today as you’re seeing this and then I will be home for that and I miss her and Lizzy immensely. It’s going to be a big happy tour, but I want to thank all of you out there for all your support. Crush it. We’ll be in this Sunday’s New York Times as the number two best selling book.
A number two New York Times best selling books so I promise you every English teacher I’ve ever had never thought I’d be in New York Times best selling author so that’s an amazing and I can definitely say, without you guys, I’m not there. Thank you so, so, so, so much and you have to pick up Crush It.
Anyway, Cave Spring 2007 Cabernet/Merlot; let’s see what’s going on in here. This is awesome. I do miss you guys immensely. Let’s give it a sniffy sniff. I’m getting a little bit of a —Mont, let’s link up CaveSpring.ca.
I’m getting a little bit of a black current flavor coming through in the nose. Little hint of like a slight wood, like a cedar chesting, like kind of like a cedar box in a cigar, a white fruit though. You can definitely cut maybe a little over extracted, a little bit as well.
Let’s give it a whirl. Okay, good from tannins, a little hot at the back end, 30% alcohol. One tale tail sign of Ontario wines is that alcohols are nice and low. It’s a much fruit friendly, fresh fruit you know, great acidity on the reds just really, really fruit from the wines in general. This is a lip hot though on the back end and the tannins are little off. It’s a little bit of disjointed little bugger.
You know, only so much you can do in the hotel room I guess but not awful definitely like Gallo Hearty Burgundy quality, but definitely not blowing me away. I think it’s got good firm tannins. I think it would last three to seven years. It would go a lot of variety of foods, steaks, burgers, things of that nature. It probably would benefit from two or three years of cellaring.
It’s kind of a wine that I've taste a lot of stuff in this category from $7.00 to $10.00 a bottle, $7.00 to $12.00 a bottle. I don’t know what’s the correct price point is. For $750, that’s the kind of quality you’d use. I’m going to score an 84. Good thing I didn’t do 85 because Mont would have feel like, “What? But there’s no—.” So, for 84 points on this wine, I’m going to give it a pass.
I didn’t’ love it, but not awful. It’s a little disappointing. It’s definitely again I think a lot of my Canadians friends have seen. They’ll going to be, “Why did you do that?” It gives Canada a bad name.”
The fact of the matter is that there’s a lot of amazing stuff going in Ontario and Cognac and then I think Canada is going to be a player not because I'm here. There’s nobody here. Don’t worry. There’s nobody from the Canadian you know, — just to make sure, I just want to prove it, there’s nobody I just want to make sure you all get it. There’s nobody here. You know nobody from the Canadian— I just want to make sure. I want to prove it. Nobody from the Canadian you know kind of liquor control you know board pushing.
So, I really, really thank Canada. It’s going to be a player in the market going forward and I’m excited about that because the wines are really good and it gives really different sensibility than we get of the U.S. wines, and I think that’s pretty darn neat. So, I’m pretty happy about that.
It’s a gorgeous city like just gorgeous, and that’s about it. Other than that, you know I just to sit here in the yap with you guys for a quick second. I just feel not disconnected. I just miss you guys. I miss you.
So, I hope you guys are all well. I hope your families are well. My Jet’s Dolphin Prediction for this week is New York Jets 17 Miami Dolphins. You’re just 23, Miami Dolphin’s 22.
I'm going to squeak it. Deep down I'm very worried about this game. No Jenkins is going to run all over us. Other than that, things were good. I can't complain. I'm massively thankful. I'm just grateful. I'm just a grateful guy and I adore you guys.
Question of the day, what do you think about Canada? And more importantly, what do you think about Toronto? Give me a little Toronto and Canada love.
I'm also, you know what? Because I want more comment. I want more comments. Lurkers please, lurkers please, lurkers, the last wine you had and your rating. The last one you’ve had and your rating so thank you guys. You, with a little bit of me, we’re changing the wine world whether they like it or not. I'm still here.
