Male1: Is there a cooperation amongst people who treat leukemia to get all of these information centralized so we know if someone is doing something that is working better? We let everybody know because there is a few of good physicians trying to help affiliate with obviously a difficult problem?
Male2: Actually, just last October, the cooperative group that has been studying cancer in children has had their 50th anniversary that is for the last 50 year in this country, a relatively small group of individuals who treat patients with cancer has been starting this for a very long time and the reason why we are here today saying that 85% for instance of all patients with leukemia can be treated, can be cured and this is because many kids have been entered in study protocols and continue today to be entered in study protocols.
We participate in this group, it is called the Children Oncology Group, as well about 200 other institutions around the country and the oldest effort is devoted to improve the outcomes to improve the cure and to improve the quality of life of those who can be cured.
Male1: We can actually say, doctors trying to help all doctors do a better job in this particular disease.
Male2: Yes, and actually, people are concerned when I presented with the idea that their child now has leukemia or another form of dreadful tumor that they are asked to participate in a study. People have some reluctance; people are concerned about the issue of research. This is an extremely controlled area which is controlled by many, many agencies of the government as well as institutional agencies and the other important thing is that it is a clear fact—it has been demonstrated in studies over studies that patients who are entered on protocol on a study protocols of the Children Oncology Group have a better outcome than those patients who are not. So whenever we offer the opportunity to participate in these studies to families, they come to us with a child with cancer and we are very comfortable with the idea that there indeed is the best choice for that child.
